Women's Institutes

AOKAUTERE The monthly meeting was held in the hall on Wednesday last. The president (Mrs Greves) welcomed all present and extended the congratulations of members to Mrs W. E. Field, who has recently been appointed a Justice of the Peace. Arrangements for the forthcoming concert and dance were finalised. Mcsdamea Eield and Orr were elected as delegates to the group committee meeting. It was decided to enter one court in - the needlework seclion in the Women’s Institute display at the A. and P. show this month. Mes dames Orr and Craven and'.Miss’Nancy Eield were elected to. lake charge of the arrangements for this court, and all members are urged to contribute at least one article towards the display, and thus make .it a representative effort. Mrs Grove's read her report-of the council meeting, at which she was a delegate in April last. At suitable intervals Miss Z. Lcamy, of Kairanga, entertained members with . songs and at the piano, and was enthusiastically received. Mrs Riddle and Miss W. Field also gave a pianoforte duet which earned much applause. Mrs Orr’s competition oi' jumbled gems was won by Mrs L. Craven. Mrs Hubbard, of Palmerston North, gave two interesting demonstrations, one on tatting and the oilier on bouquet-making, and slie was accorded a hearty vote at thanks. Mrs Hubbard and Mrs Urhbolim (Wha.karongo) judged the competitions. In the senior division, for the best soft toy, not knitted, several excellent articles were shown, the first, prize going to Mrs Orr. In the juniors, for the best knitted scarf, the first prize was won by Miss T. Lankshcar. The hostesses responsible for. the enjoyable afternoon’s programme and for the dainty afternoon tea were Mesdames Brungar and Orr and Miss 11. Field.

WOODVILLE. The June meeting of the Woodville Women’s Institute was held in the Parish hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs, N. M. Burnett presiding over an excellent attendance. Mrs. H. Paterson, Dominion president, wrote acknowledging congratulations extended to her upon being a recipient of a Jubilee medal, Mrs. Burnett mentioning the great amount of good work done by Mrs. Paterson. The E.S.A, gratefully acknowledged the assistance rendered by members in the sale of poppies. The trade stall was again well patronised, Mesdamcs Mount Cort, and Oliver being in charge, and it was decided to continue holding the stall throughout the vear. Two new members were enrolled and a hearty welcome was given to Mrs. Lovell and Miss Staeo, who have been in hospital. A drama and glee pinging entertainment will be held in the Parish hall early in July. Mrs. Munro, of Papatawa, gave a helpful .demonstration on box-covering, converting a cardboard box into a tastefully decorated and useful article, while a second demonstration was given by Mrs. F. do Malmanehe on making scagrass stools, two completed stools being much admired; Both demonstrators w r crc accorded a hearty Vote of thanks. The competition for “best lace-bark novelty” was won by Miss Arlidgc, Miss Beattie being second. A much appreciated pianoforte duet was played by Mesdames McCormick and Schroder. Congratulations were extended to the secretary, Mrs. H. P. Horne, on becoming the Mayoress, who asked for members’ cooperation in helping to relievo local distress. Afternoon tea was served by the appointed hostesses and the meeting closed with the singing of t.ic National Anthem.
