G.N. MEETING. THIRD DAY FIELDS.

FOXTON RACES

Notice is drawn to an advertisement appearing elsewhere in this issue that to-morrow, Saturday, the I'oxton Facing Club will hold its winter meeting on the i'oxton course, and this year the club has gone to considerable trouble to eater for the requirements of its patrons. A special innovation will be a win and place dividend indicator alongside the tote house which should prove most helpful to investors, the lirst race, the maiden event, is to start at 11.30 a.m. promptly and the remainder of the events will be run at 45minute intervals. The system of betting, as indicated above, is win and place. The Helds are of handy size and a good class of horse is included. The course is m excellent order and a good day’s outing is assured. The Mauawatu Hunt will meet tomorrow at the homestead of Mr. J. 11. Norllicott, Waituiia. Hare hunting will commence at Id nuon. HIDING ENGAGEMENTS FOE FOXTON K. Reed will be in the saddle at I'oxton and his engagements include Happy Hunting, Gold Mission and Bodvline. A. McDonald will ride Saltspray in the hurdles. GELDINGS NO LONGER BARRED It is interesting to read that in connection with at least one important threc-ycar-old race in America geldings are no longer barred. In previous years the Preakness Stakes, run at Pimlico (Baltimore, Maryland), was confined lo entire colts and lillies. This year geldings were admitted. The Prcakness, which was decided fast month, carried £5(100 added money, and a sweepstakes of £IOO lor starters.

Evidently the Pimlico management has arrived at the conclusion that it is better a gelding should aeeosionally tvin its big three-year-old race than the increase of possibly inferior stallions should be encouraged. WINS ANOTHER NATIONAL In April Mrs. F. A. Clark won another Grand National with Kcllsboro’ Jack. This time it was the Scottish Grand National, of £7OO, 3 miles 7 furlongs, run at Bogside. There were six starters, and Kellsboro’ Jack, who had 11.10, and was an even-money favorite, won easily by eight lengths. After Kellsboro ’ Jack's 1933 Liverpool Grand National, Mrs Clark announced he was not to again run in the big race at Aintree, and for the last two years he was not entered.

AGAINST THE RULES. Under the V.R.C. rules a trainer’s wife is not allowed to own horses, and in consequence Greensea’s nomination for the Grand National Hurdle Race was rejected.

NIBLICK USED ON GREEN! Something in the nature of a cloudburst descended on the Manly course on a, recent Saturday afternoon, and as -a consequence B. Rattray, in the four-ball best-ball against par competition, had to play, and played successfully, an unusual shot (states the tty rider Referee). At the par-l'our twelfth, he was little more than a foot from the hole with his second shot. But once there lie was confronted with a problem. His ball was not only covered by water, but the hole was also submerged.

Using a putter was useless in the circumstances, so Rattray took out his niblick and lofted the ball out of the water and iuto the hole for a birdie three.

The feat was a notable on?, but one wonders how Rattray would have attempted to triumph over the problem set him if his ball had been a jioater instead of a sinker.
