Planning for Coming Croquet Season

ANNUAL MEETING OF MANAWATU ASSOCIATION

The fifteenth annual meeting of the Manawatu Croquet Association vas held in the Commerce buildings yesterday afternoon, Mrs W. B. Mayes presiding over representatives of the following clubs i —Northern, lakaio, Manawatu, Shannon, Terrace End, Woodvillc, Danncvirke and Oroua. The annual report (previously published in the “Times”) was adopted as read. The balance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory position with a credit to carry forward, and this was also adopted on the motion of Mcsdamcs Kobertson and Glass (Danncvirke).

Correspondence Tko New Zealand Croquet Council uotified a correction in the date of the Dominion tournament, which is to be held in Palmerston North next year, January 22 being the date for the commencement of play and January 21 for the annual meeting. The Croquet Council also notified other tournament dates and locations for the 1935-3 G season as follow: North Island, Hawke’s Bay, January S; South Island, Canterbury, January 7; English gold and silver mallets, Taranaki, March 12; New Zealand gold and silver mallots, Christchurch, March. Tho Croquet Council dealt with the matter of the association’s responsibility in arranging local tournaments so that dates would sot clash with neighbouring tournaments. It was realised .that arrangements regarding local tournaments were entirely a matter for associations to deal with, but it would certainly be in the interests of croquet generally if dates of provincial tournaments wero so arranged as to maka for continuity and remain in something of a fixed order.

A copy of last year’s grouping was appended, and approximate dates suggested as follow:— Wairarapa, November 27; Wellington, February 1; Manawatu, February 17; Taranaki South, February 12; Wanganui, February 22; Taranaki, March 4; Hawke’s Bay, February 25; South Hawke’s Bay, March

With regard to Hawke’s Bay’s contention that it was confusing forDannevirke to name their tournament “Southern Hawke’s Bay,” tho New Zealand Council suggested that it be changed to tho “Danevirko tournament.” It was realised that Dannevirke was a tournament of longstanding, holding the namo of Southern Hawke’s Bay since it had been established. There was no doubt as to its popularity and the club was to be heartily commended for the efforts which they had made to bring about such a successful meeting each year. The council hoped Dannevirke would continue to display a spirit of generous co-operation in adjusting this matter. Eegret was expressed that anything should bo allowed to disturb the harmony which should otherwise exist between such keen, enthusiastic and loyal followers of the sport, as are members of tho Hawke’s Bay Association and those of the Danncvirke Club. —A copy of this fetter was handed to the Dannevirke representative (Mrs Glass), who mentioned that other sports bodies had found no difficulty in this respect. She mentioned that valuable trophies were held, suitably inscribed, and the club would suffer hardship if the name had to be changed. Tho matter was left with Dannevirke club to deal with at its annual meeting. Election of Officers

Officers were elected for t'ho ensuing year as follow:— President, Mrs W. E. Mayes (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mesdames W. J. Robertson (Manawatu) and H. Glass (Dannevirke); secretary, Mrs S. J. It was decided that the secretary bo provided with the telephone as before. The meeting’ favoured a suggestion put forward by Mrs Mayes that in the silver buttons competitions clubs bo permitted to substitute & runner-up in the event of the winner of any grade being unable to pl'ay, thus ensuring the club’s representation. It . was agreed to try this method out nest season.

The programme for the coming tournament, which will bo tho same as last year, was approved. The meeting closed with the usual compliment to the chair.
