Combined Services In Social Mood

CRICKET TROPHIES PRESENTED AT SMOKE CONCERT.

The "good comradeship existing amongst members of tho Combined Sendees Cricket and Hockey Clubs was never more in evidence than at the smoke concert last evening over which Col. J. H. Whyte presided. They had as guests Mr. A. M. Ongley, president of the Manawatu Cricket Association. Mr. P. McLachlan, representing the Manawatu Hockey Association and Mr. 11. Byers, representative of the Manawatu Hockey Umpires' Association.

A feature of the function was the presentation by Mr. Ongley to the respective captains, the T. R. Moore Cup Avon by the club in the Wednesday cricket competitions and the Oakley Shield avoii in the junior A competitions played on Saturdays. In handing over the trophies, Mr. Ongley offered liis congratulations. Toasts honoured Avere: “Manawatu Cricket Association,” proposed by Mr. W. E. Winks and replied to by Mr. A. ML Ongley; “Manawatu Hockey Association,” proposed by Mr. Downs and replied to by Mr. P. McLachlan; “Manawatu Cricket Umpires’ Association,” proposed by Mr. W. H. Wilson and replied to by Mr. Ongley; ‘ ManaAvatu Hockey Umpires’ Association,” proposed by Mr. J. A. McGavin and replied to by Mr. 11. Byers; ' The Successful Teams,” “Affiliated Military Units” »nd “Kindred Clubs and Sports. ” Items were contributed between the toasts.

Col. Whyte also took the opportunity to congratulate the clubs on their success and more particularly Avere their victories meritorious, he said, in that it was only four years ago that cricket was fiTst attempted. That year the club camo out runners-up. In 1932 they again held that honour in the Wednesday competitions. In 1933 both in hockey and cricket they were run-ners-up "and last season Avon the Wednesday cricket competition and junior A contest held on Saturdays. Now the 1935 hockey season had been entered upon and Services were leading in both grades. Col. Whyte hoped success Avould still be theirs.
