Jubilee Bonus For Relief Workers

MONTH’S PAY INSTEAD OF WEEK’S URGED Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The Christchurch Unemployment Committee, at a meeting to-day, decided to ask the Unemployment Board to consider an increase in tho bonus to be paid to relief workers in certain categories as part of the celebration of the King’s Jubilee. The request finally agreed upon was that the Government be asked to provide a bonus of one month’s pay, instead of one week’s pay. Some oC the members questioned whether the board had tho money to meet the request, which would cost upwards of £200,000. However, there was no vote against the proposal.

Increase in Relief Pay Asked BASIS TOR UNEMPLOYED GIRLS Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 29. A deputation representing the unemployed urged the Minister of Employment (Hon. S. Ct. Smith) this morning to increase the relief pay to 10/- a week and to place unemployed girls on the same basis as single unemployed men in regard to wages. During the speeches one member of the deputation, Mrs. Penny', said that single girls in every city in New Zealand were not getting a fairdcal. Many were being driven on to the streets.

The Minister: You must not say that to me. Stick to what you know of in Christchurch. Don't cast, stigmas on centres that have done their duty by single girls and have protected them. Mrs. Penny replied that she had been in Wellington and Dunedin, and she maintained that what she said was correct.

After other speakers had been heard the Minister promised to mako a personal investigation of all complaints. He pointed out, however, that if the request was granted the Unemployment Board's funds would be washed out in six months.
