Community Welfare at Takaro

ANNUAL SESSION OF PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION People interested in the welfare of tho Takaro suburb gathered in good numbers last night for the annual meeting of the Progressive Association. Mr G. H. Jarrctt presided. The president said residents were taking a great interest in tho park, which would soon afford pleasure to a great number of people. A great deal of time and labour had been expended on it. It was gratifying that every request preferred by tho association during the year had been granted; a good hearing had always been accorded it. Tho membership of 251 was a big advance over the figure of ISO which the association boasted three years ago. There was a considerable credit balance in hand, and it was questionable if funds should be accumulated to any extent by such a body. Something should be done soon to help members, particularly the juniors, who could probably be assisted in their sports activities. It was with this object that much of the money had been subscribed.

The report as published in the “Time” and a balance-sheet showing a credit of over £22 wore adopted. Officers elected were: —President, Air E. H. Smith; vice-presidents, Messrs W. J. Woollett and G. Weller; lion, secretary and treasurer, Air J. H. Cribb; hon. auditor, Air I. Robinson; committee, Mcsdames G. Evans, G. 11. Jarrett, G. Foster, E. H. Smith, J. Wass, J. Denham, E. Packer, Messrs A. Cooksley, Gi H. Jarrett, A. Smith, Al. Abrahams, J. Wass and E. Packer. Declining renomination, Air Jarrett •expressed thanks to all who had cooperated with him. Tributes were paid to the achievements of Air Jarrett during three years in office, his successor declaring that he had been most zealous in furthering the interests of the district.

The meeting placed on record appreciation of the energy and enthusiasm of Air Jarrett’s work. Air Smith said the association had fully justified its existence. Takaro park would still have been a cow roddoclc but for the cxistcnco of the association, and other amenities had been secured for tho district. Tho City Council was always ready to lend a kindly car. Air Jarrett recalled the inception of the association and its fight —nearly successful —to secure a school on tho site of the old gasworks. By making the right approaches in a courteous fashion, the association could always get what it wanted if the request was reasonable. Various matters concerning Takaro welfare wero discussed.
