Autumn Meeting at Awapuni To-day

With Big Fields Engaged Racing Will be Interesting

Review of First Day’s Card

If the number and high standard of horses entered are to be taken as reliable guides, to say nothing’ of the weather and excellent condition of the Awapuni course, the Manawatu Racing- Club’s Autumn meeting, which opens to-day and concludes to-morrow, should prove a great attraction to racing enthusiasts. Big fields have been carded for each event and the racing should be particularly interesting. The first race is timed to start at 12.15 p.m. and the betting will be conducted on the single pool system with two dividends in fields of not less than five starters.

Karore Hurdles The programme will be opened with tbo Karero Hurdles over a mile and a--Imlr, and it will be contested by a good class ol' horse. Illuminate has •pride of place with 11,5, whose recent performances suggest that he is not overburdened with weight, l’ango and Tareha aro in receipt of 17lbs from Illuminate and as they have shown a liking for the game and have plenty of paeo thoy make it hard for the topweight. The same may be said of March Alone, Headland and Sunny Song while To Ua, but for jumping over the fence on to an inside track looked as if lie might have won a hurdle race at, Woodville. Three that may make most appeal are Tango, Illuminate and Tareha. Autumn Plate No loss than 21 horses have been accepted for the Maiden event which will bo decided over seven furlongs with all carrying 8.7. There are a number of unknown quantities, but among those who have shown ability to gallop are Arouse, Count Willonyx, Eka Tore, Evasion, Miss Paugo, Spearshot, Tauinau and Wall in o Nui. Punters will lind it a hard race to pick, but horses most likely to make appeal are Count Willonyx, Evasion and Wahinc Nui. Prince of Wales Handicap • The Prince of Wales Handicap, over nine furlongs, should provido an excellent contest and there is plenty of recent, form to guide the public. Might, Aga Khan, Miss Hushabye, Pladie, Glenvano and Illuminate have all Avon during the past I'cav Aveeks, while the others may bo expected to bo in the money any time now. When, the .much inn closes it may be found that, the public have gone for Might, Aga Khan and Rust. Woodhey Handicap The hack sprint lias attracted auut her big Held, and Avith Cawbeen, Harvest 'Moon, Secrecy, .Dick Whittington, Owlsgleaiu, King’s Lancer, Note Issue, State Hank and Leprechaun, all in to confuse the issue, the race boars a very open appearance. Secrecy and King's Lancer will be bracketed, and they may be preferred to Dick W'hittington and Owlsgleaiu. Cloverlea Nursery Handicap There is an acceptance of 21 youngsters for the Cloverlea Nursery, and no one Avill offer to take over W. G. Price’s job as starter. It is a livcfurlong flutter, and the draw for positions at the barrier is likely to have some bearing on the result. Legatee, Gay Sheik, Severe and Fulojoy arc speedy enough to attract much attention to the head of the card, but further down the list is the 11 Duee-Happy Lauding bracket, Blue Garter, Shiricy Dene and Mr T. H. Lowry’s colt, Plato. The public may look to these to furnish the winner, and preference may be shown for Fulojoy, Gay Sheik and Severe. The Awapuui Cup The principal event of the day is the Awapuni Cup, a woight-for-ago event over 10 furlongs. Hazoor, Rulanut and Silver Ring will’ be required to carry 9.2, Nightly and Red Manfred being in receipt of 21bs. Of these Silver Ring may be given preference. The lightweights are Sporting Blood (5.4) and Gay Blonde (8.1), and these uniA’ be preferred to Miss Hushabyc (8.13). It is a good-class field and the favourite may be Silver Ring, Gay Blonde or Sporting Blood. J. M. Johnston Memorial The Johnston Memorial, the open sprint, has drawn a Held of J 7 runners, Rerepai and Rereatu being bracketed. Souchong and Princess Doreen are at

the head of the weights, and S.ll should not prevent them from making a good showing. They may be passed over, however, for the Rcrepai-tßereatu bracket, in viow of Rerepai's Trcntham win. There is plenty of other material to make it a great race with more than a possibility that the result will come as a surprise. Though the favourite may be one of those at the top of the card, there Avill be support for Royal Routine, Burnish, Million, Navaho, Refresher, Cottesmore and Gulins, to say nothing of Land Tax. It is bound to be a good betting race, but those in biggest demand may be the Berepai-Rereatu bracket, Souchong and Burnish. Te Matai Handicap The concluding event of the. day will be tire Te Matai Handicap over nine furlongs, and this Avill' not. be any easier for the public than the others. There arc 15 starters and only one or two of them have not got recent form to recommend their chances. Three that may make most appeal are Bonnie Vale, Sunce and Marching Song.
