Preparing for the Rugby Season

UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING r Mr. W. B. Kells (president) presided over .the annual meeting of the United Football Club hold in the Kosy -lounge on Tuesday evening. There was an attendance of approximately 40, several apologies for unavoidable absence were received. The chairman expressed brief wcl- j come to all members taking such a keen interest in the welfaro of the club. The annual report (previously published) and tho balance sheet, revealing a credit, were read and adopted. But for the fact that the club had decided that members of the club, who were out of work, should still take part in the games, the credit balanco would have been greater, a member explained. These members had been holped and rightly so. The chairman, speaking to tho report, said that it was commendable how members had stood by the club; some of whom could have obtained a game with the best sides in the district. The past year had been a very satisfactory one from every point of view but it was anticipated that even better things would be accomplished in the future. The third grade team had won in its grade, also tho Wednesday team, and a great deal of credit was due to those who had coached them. Personally, as president, he was -pleased with the performances registered by all teams, representing the club, said tho speaker. It had certainly been a duty of the club to assist members -who were out of work and the club had been proud of this achievement. Briggs, W. Carruthers, 11. A. Stone and J. Bobb. Mr C. A. Pritchard was appointed coach for tho junior team and Mr J. Bobb coach for the third grade and the Wednesday team. Tho senior coach appointed was Mr C. Findlay. The Manawatu Bugby Football Union notified, that its annual meeting would bo held on March 20. A tribute to the past services of the president, Mr Kells, was paid and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his work on behalf of the club. Eulogistic tribute was also mado to the work of the secretary, Mr Stone.. A number of new members —17 in all—were elected to membership. Subscriptions were fixed as the same as tho previous year. Mr G. Edmonds was appointed as an assistant-secretary to control the Wednesday games. It was decided to apply to the Bugby Union for Thursday evening as the gymnasium night. The first practice was fixed for March 30. Mr Kells generously donated a trophy to be allocated in the Wednesday competition and the third grade (Saturday) as thought fit. The first practice in this grade is to be commenced on the Wednesday following the Saturday practice. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr and Mrs Murphy for the use of the lounge and refreshments. ENTHUSIASM FOE NEW PLAYING SEASON, OLD BOYS’ FOOTBALLERS, At a meeting of the Old Boys’ Football Club on Tuesday night, Mr J. W. llutherfurd presided. The sixth grade competition last year had enabled tho club to make a valuable addition, and, if senior members took and maintained an interest in the club, the grade would prove an invaluablo training ground for higher grade men in the near future. It was gratifying too to know that subscriptions in the past year had been paid in with great faithfulness. Of the secretary, Mr G. H. Dawick, the chairman said that he was an ideal secretary, doing all that could possibly be done to, further the welfare of the club. “He is tho best secretary I over knew,’’ said Mr Butherfurd, “and it is a great pity that he is forced to relinquish the position.’’ Others who deserved special commendation were Mr Kells, who had acted as selector, and Mr G. Fox, the club captain. The club also regretted the loss of three men who had been transferred —Messrs Howell, Lang and Irvine. Mr Butherfurd urged members to make every endeavour to maintain and further cordial relations with kindred clubs. The spirit of football should never be overlooked. He was sure the club would joiu with him in voicing congratulations to B. McKenzie, of Kia Toa, who had been the recipient of All Black honours. A report from the senior coach, Mr 0. J. Galpin, was road to the meeting. Tho report traversed, the reasons for the team’s success. The club recorded its appreciation of the services rendered the club by Mr Galpin and by Mr .J.
