The solicitor to the Auckland Education Board yesterday advised it that, sites of tennis courts in school grounds which recently have been assessed for rates by the City Council are not rateable. He said he thought the local authority could not assess the lands even if it were possible to assess the tennis club as occupier. Should a magistrate sitting as Judge of the Assessment Court decide it was his function merely to determine the rateable value the board might have to take other proceedings in the Supreme Court.

Hurtling to earth at a. terrific speed, a screw picket which had fallen from an aeroplane 1000 feet above just missed Miss Taylor, the daughter of Sir. E. M. Taylor, of Barrington street, Christchurch, as she stood in the garden of her home. Mrs. Mary Priest, honorary secretary of the club, claimed from Mrs. F. Vincent, a total sum of £ls for damages. She alleged that Mrs. Vincent had falsely and maliciously used concerning plaintiff the words: “1 know all about your character and if I told people what I know of your character they would never come back tg this , hall again.” Further, that she referred to plaintiff as one of the "scum of the earth,” and, lastly, that Mrs. Vincent flicked plaintiff in the face with a pair of gloves. After hearing the evidence Mr. H. P. Lawry gave judgment for plaintiff for £7 and costs.
