A settlement was reached iu the Canterbury drivers’ award before the Conciliation Council at Christchurch yesterday morning. The new award will represent a reduction of 5 per cent, on tho old award, which operated two years ago, but an increase of 3 per cent, on the present rate. There has been no award in tho industry for two years. Overtime will be at the rate of time and a-quarter.

The French swimming champion, J. Taris, and fancy diver, E. Poussard, arrived at Auckland from Sydney yesterday for their Dominion tour. Taris holds tho European championships 'for the 400 metres ahcl 1500 metres, and in Australia lie won the national' titles for tho 220, 440 and SSO yards. Poussard said the standard of diving in Australia was disappointing.

Stead}'' progress is being made with the foundations of the new bridge across the Waikato river at the northern boundary of Hamilton. The piers on the eastern bank are being made ready for concreting, and work has commenced on the last series of piles to be driven. Unusually hard ground has been struck at the site of the pier in the stream near tho western bank.

A Christchurch telegram reports that war on the white butterfly, the caterpillar of which has caused much damage to Canterbury crops, is now proceeding, and supplies of the natural enemy, a small dark fly, have been released at Timaru and Heathcotc under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture, which hopes oventually to eradicate 80 per cent, of the post. Crashing through a post and rail bridge at Helmore’s road, a truck driven by Sinclair Saggers, of St. Albans, Christchurch, came to rest upside down in the Avon river at 9 o’clock on Sunday night. Mr Saggers and a woman friend were pinned in the truck under the water, but managed to crawl out of the back and on to land. Mr Saggers received a slight cut and minor scratches on the face. His companion escaped with a shaking. Had it not been for the fact that the truck was equipped with a high carrier’s hood open at the back the consequences would have been serious. Mr Saggers states that the accelerator jambed as he was attempting to turn to the right at the entrance to the bridge.
