Life-savers Bestow Awards

ACTIVITIES OF MANAWATU CENTRE. Mr. E. J. Werry presided at a meeting of tho Manawatu Head Centre of the Royal Life-saving Society lust evening. The following life-saving awards were approved:— Dannevirke High School.—Bronze medallions: Shirley Scott, Yvonne Stein, Joyce Shepherd. Proficiency ccrtiiientes: J. McCool, A. McCool, I). H. Eaton, N. Lino, N. Mitchell.

Tangimoana Life-saving Club.— Bronze medallions: 11. D. Hcndle, E. E. Leeks, A. D. Webby.

West End School. —Bronze medallions: lau Stevenson, Frank Lindsay, Harold Richardson, Betty Schwabe. Intermediate: Gordon Sutherland, Harry Mouldcy, Ada Trow, Mauric'; Oliver, Winton Hatch. Primary: Ellen Williams. Elementary: Ronald Simpson.

Terrace End School. —Bronze medallions: Bruce Jenkinson, Douglas Duncalf, Brian Waldegrave, Fred Parker.

First class instruction: T. E. Douds (West End). The meeting considered three remits that are to be considered at the annual council meeting of ilio society in May and approved of the proposal to reduce the individual membership fee from 2s Gd to .Is, and that the cost of silk costume badges to branches be icduced from Is Gd to Is and the cost to candidates be reduced from 2s Gd to Is Gd. The meeting did not approve of a proposal that tho water demonstration part of the examinations in tho first class instructor’s certificates, be deleted but thought it could bo cut out of tho second class certificate. The New Zealand Council advised that Manawatu’s share of the £IOO received from the Government as a share in one of the art unions, was £l3 19s Sd.

The action of the secretary in writing to the New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Association expressing surprise at the Centre not participating in a share of the £SO grant from an art union, was approved. A grant to the Centro for tho purpose of providing life-saving equipment on tho beaches in the Manawatu, would be a move in

the right direction to the surf lifesaving movement locally. Air. Baird (Foxton) was appointed to represent the Centre at the annual conference of the Surf Association at. New Plymouth on February 22. Reference was mado to tho invaluable services given to the society by Air. W. C. Collier over many years. Mr. Collier had resigned ns an official of tho Centre owing to his leaving Palmerston North for Waihi. Tho chairman thought some tangible recognition of the work of Air. Collier should be made and the meeting approved of the suggestion. The gift will take the form of an illuminated address.

Tho resignation of Air. J. AI. Arthur (Terrace End) from tho executive owing to his proceeding to Scotland, •was received with regret and it was decided to place on record fippreciation of his work while a member of tho executive as well as forward him a letter of thanks for services rendered. A donation of two guineas is to be made to the Waitarcre Domain Board for the purchase of a reel with a suggestion that a Surf Club be formed at tho beach.

A sub-committee was set up to present a report on tho requirements of the district nnd clubs in the matter o. life-saving equipment. Advice was received from tho New Zealand Council that Air. Fishenden, ex-cliairman of tho Central Executive (London) would be in Palmerston North on Tuesday, February 19, arriving at noon and leaving for Wanganui on Thursday about 9 a.m. ATr. Billson, New Zealand president, will be accompanying the English visitor. Tlie meeting made arrangements for entertaining the visitors.
