“ Ringing In n

THE RED DO OK CASE. COUGHLIN SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT United Press Association, —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Nov. 21. Rupert Coughlin, aged 3S, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment for conspiring in "ringing in" the horso Redlock at Murray Bridge races. Coughlin was charged with conspiring with two other men to defraud the Murray Bridge Racing Club between March 30th and July 29th. It was alleged Coughlin falsely represented on an entry form and by other means that the race horse entered in the Trial Stakes at-the Club’s meeting on July 28th was Redlock, whereas the horse was actually Erbio, which won the race. POK WEST COAST Air. A. J.ouisson has disposed of Hacre Tomi to C. C. who purchased him on behalf of ono of his clients, Mr. T. Irving, of Reef ton, who also races Drum Fire. Haero Tonu cost Mr. Louisson 425 guineas as a yearling, but although ho won a few races, ho has never actually raced up to the form expected of him early m liis career. He will represent his new owner on the West Coast holiday circuit. AMERICAN TRAINING IDEAS One of America’s most successful trainers is J. Fitzsimmons, and in a recent, interview with a representative, of The Blood Horse, lie said he does not believe in giving horses much work onco he is satisfied they are right, J'One stiff gallop, if your horse is in condition, is ample," he remarked. "If your charge is running frequently, no hard gallops arc needed between races, except a dash to sharpen him up. However, if his engagements are two or

three weeks apart) then he should have b. good gallop thrown under him a couple of days before he goes to the post.’’ Fitzsimmons believes it is impossible to plan the training of a horse, adding; "They must be conditioned according to the way you find thorn in I ho morning, Horses change from day to day, as do human beings, and the trainer must be the judge of how much work they need, and what they are equal to standing. ’ ’

THAR LAP’S DAM When Entreaty, dam of Thar Lap, was sent up for salo at tho Kaituna Stud dispersal sale in March, 1932, Mr. Fred Armstrong, of Christchurch, had to go to 1500 guineas to secure her. She then had a colt foal running with her, and was in foal to Night Raid. The foal was later known as Friday Night, who unfortunately is never likely to show his truo capabilities owing to leg trouble, and the mare’s next production was To Nira, whose sale to go to England was reported over the week-end. It is understood tho filly's price was 2000 guineas, so that Mr. Armstrong will be practically clear on his transaction, and retains the marc to breed from, while Friday Night must still command a good value even as a sire. PARIS SENSATION A Paris writer says that considerable excitement has been caused recently in tho main enclosure at the different meetings in that city by the betting methods of a racegoer, over 00 years of ago, who carries about with him a bag containing a very large sum of money in bank notes. He is invariably followed by a small crowd interested in his operations on the tote. While he occasionally goes for a very big plunge, he generally puts from £BOO to £ISOO on a race, and sometimes refrains from betting. Ilis usual method is to support the three first favourites, and he won a heavy stake over Brantome in the Prix Royal Oak at Longchamp. It was in part due t.o his sup: port of two or three of the' runners that ■those who backed the big outsider winner of the gentlemen riders' event at Le Tremblay last month got nearly (10 to .1 for their'money. It is a pity that such, punters do not as a rule last very long, and he will probably soon disappear as quickly as ho came into the limelight. Even if his system has any merits about it, so many others of the public wait on his heels to back his selections that he will soon be taking an utterly false price. As ho invested £3500 on four of eight runners in a race at Maisons-La fittc,. and missed the winner, he will certainly be lucky if his System does not eventually land him in. a hole. REDUCING THE PEES As yearling prices in America this season were-not quite up to expectations, the fees of stallions at. the C. V. Whitney Farm, Mrs. Payne Whitney’s Greentrce Farm, and J. H. Whitney's Llangollen Farm are being reduced. According t.o present arrangements, America’s champion, Equipoise, is to do stud duty next season at a fee of £3OO Stallions reduced include;—St. Germans (sire of Twenty Grand) from £3OO to £150; Pennant, £3OO to £200; Mad. Hatter, £2OO to £100; Whichone, £200; and £150; Royal Minstrel, £3OO to £200; and The Porter, £2OO to £IOO. The stallions mentioned are still in strong demand, and Major Beard, general manager of the Whitney breeding interests, said that the move was really to give owners of outside mares some assurance of selling their yearlings at a profit. Palm, who was awarded equal top

weight in the Waituna Hurdles at Feilding, is not. eligible to start, as he is no longer a hack. 't> A* 4> <?> Spiral is not engaged at Feilding, and according to a report from Wanganui his next outing will be in the Auckland Cup. The sou of .Limond is going along nicely, and he should be in first-class order for his Ellerslie engagements. <*> <§> TROTTING FOEBUEY PARK MEETING FIRST-DAY FIELDS The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting opens io-day and will be concluded on Saturday. According to a Dunedin message the weather is not all that it. might be but if no further rain fails the track should be in good order. The single pool system of betting will operate.
