Stanway

From Our Own Correspondent. “Scots Wha Hae.” Unusual sights and sounds were experienced in Stanway on Friday night last, when, at about 8 p.m., the echoes of the countryside were awakened by the skirl of pipes and the beating of drums. It was tho occasion of a Grand Ingleside, held jointly by the Women’s Institute (local branch), and the Feilding Pipe Band and Caledonian Society. For the first waltz, and for several other dances during tho evening, instead of the usual jazz orchestra, the music was provided by a bravv piper, who did his work with a will, and kept most excellent time. During the evening the Chief of the Caledonian Society, Air. Fraser, thanked all present for their attewlance, and explained that the series of entertainments was to serve two purposes. The Society, he said, had been named the Feilding and District Caledonian Society, so that members from the country districts would be able to join up, and one of the purposes of these country inglesides was to induce those interested to become members. The other purpose was to raise funds to purchase a new set of uniforms for the pipers, and, he concluded, if all responses were equal to that of Stanway, the new uniforms would soon be purchased. Residents of Stanway will bo very pleased to learn that little Betty Christian has returned home from Palmerston North, much improved in health, and looking more like her usual cheery self again. Much needed rain fell on Sunday, after a real scorcher cm Saturday. This will be very much appreciated by the dairy farmers, with whom tho dry weather was beginning to take the appearance of a very serious probleni. However, tanks and dams have been replenished, and the fields have resumed their green colour, which was beginning to disappear.
