Fast Trip by Motor-car
DUNEDIN TO CHRISTCHUKUH Ter Press Association. DUNEDIN, Nov. .18. During the past few days an argument arose over the time in which a motor-car could accomplish the journey from Dunedin to Christchurch. A motorist claimed that he could cover the distance in 4 hours 50 minutes or less; a farmer held ho could not. A wager of £SO aside was handed to a stakeholder, and the motorist left Dunedin at noon on Friday for the northern town. - The other party thought that he, too, would like to go to Christchurch, presumably to see what happened to his money. He therefore went out to the aerodrome and engaged a ’plane to convey him to Christchurch. The ’plane was soon on its way, but the aviator found that the exuberance of his farmer. friend was rather disturbing, so he swung round and returned to the aerodrome. In the meantime the driver of the car was speeding on his way north and
he reached his appointed destination—the gates ,of Christchurch hospital—at 4.33 p.m., or 17 minutes under the time limit allowed. As the distance by road to Christchurch is 236 miles, the car averaged about 52J miles an hour, and completed the journey in some 2$ hours less than the time occupied by express trains.
