Passengers by the Cathay, which reached Fremantle yesterday from London, include Cardinal Macrory, the Papal Legate to the Melbourne Eucharistic Congress, and members of the English women’s cricket team.

His Lordship the Bishop of Wellington (Rt. Rev. T. 11. Sprott) will arrive in Palmerston North to-day to hold confirmation services in tho city. He will be the guest of Canon G. Y. and Mrs. Woodward at the All Saints’ vicarage.

A Christchurch Press Association message announces the death of Mr. Peter Lloyd Davies, aged til, formerly a well-known land agent and a keen sportsman. He was an ex-president of the Canterbury Football Association and also a prominent bowler and Freemason.

Inspector R. Ward, of Wanganui, lias been appointed inspector at; Auckland and will on December 1 succeed Inspector J. W. Hollis, who is retiring. With the retirement this month of Inspector P. Harvey, of Palmerston North (who is being succeeded b.y Inspector S. Rawlc) a number of other changes are pending.

The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Alfred Ball, senr., one of Invercargill’s best known citizens. Ho was 88 years of age. As Mayor, councillor and Town Clerk of youth Invercargill, he played a prominent part in the development of that borough. He also took a keen interest in politics and was an ardent sportsman. —Press Association.

Mr. James Evans, whoso death occurred this week in the Palmerston North Hospital after a protracted illness, was born 78 years ago in Staffordshire, England. Mr. Evans sailed from Plymouth in the ship Coptic, and on arrival at Lyttelton lie proceeded to the West Coast where an uncle, Mr. J. Evans, was engaged in farming at Crooked River. He came to the North Island about 29 years ago and followed various callings in different portions of the island. His parents followed their son to New Zealand within some IS months, and it was only in April last that his mother passed away at the great age of 97 years. In his younger days Mr. Evans was a splendid musician, playing both the violin and ’cello, and was a member of orchestras at Westport, Huntly and at Tiakitahuna. Ho never married, and of his parents’ family of 11 children only four sisters survive him, Mesdames M. Passey (Palmerston North), J. C.

Williamson (Ashhurst), J. Paine (Waitara) and M. Jensen (Waitara). There are in addition, 13 nephews and six nieces, and 3.1 grand-nephews and 2-1 grand-nieces,

The inquest on two girls, Betty Isabella Simniis and Enid Thelma Siinmis, who were drowned in the Hutt river on yuuday, was held at Wellington yesterday. The father stated that only the elder girl could swim and usually bathed at the safe part of the river, but on this occasion went to a dangerous place. The verdict was “accidentally drowned,” the Coroner remarking on the dangerous nature of tho spot.

“This is extraordinarily generous,” said the chairman of the Auckland Transport Board (Mr. J. A. C. All uin) when the board was informed yesterday that one of its debenture-holders, a resident of Auckland, would voluntarily convert his holdings, which are valued at £21,000. Mr. Allum said tho citizen had bought the debentures in London, so that they did not come within the scope of the board’s conversion order. He had explained that now he was a resident in New Zealand he iclt it his duty to convert. “His action is unique,” said Mr. Allum, “but he believes others would do Ihe same if the position were pointed out to them,” The board decided to send to the citizen a letter expressing high appreciation of his public-spiritedness in helping the board at a most difficult time.
