Cardinal Pietro Gusparri was Papal Secretary of Slate from 190 S to 1930, when, he resigned at the age of almost 78 years. He was born at TJssito on Atay 5, 1852, and took degrees in philosophy, theology, and Canon Law in Rome. When, quite a. young man he became Professor of Canon Law at the Catholic Institute in Paris. In 1394 he was appointed Domestic Prelate, and four years later Archbishop of Caesarea (Palestine) and Apostolic Delegate to Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, On his return to Rome he became Secretary of tho Congregation of Extraordinary Eccelesiastical Affairs. He brought about tho reconciliation of Franco- and the Holy See and to him Pope Pius X entrusted the codification of Canon Law which took thirteen years. He became a. cardinal in 1907, and for many years -he directed the foreign affairs of the Vatican. One of his final tasks was to conduct tho negotiations -which led to the Late ran. Treaties between the Pope and the King of Italy, and set up a Vatican State.
