Combined Tramping Clubs' Sports Meeting

OUTING AT TOH ANGINA The second annual sports meeting of tho Northern Tararua Clubs was held over the week-end at the Totara Reserve in the Fohangina Valley. The event attracted nearly 70 Hampers from the Manawatu, lluahiue and Tararua Tramping Clubs and a very enjuw. do function was held though the programme had to be curtailed whCn rain set in on Sunday afternoon. Seven runners entered for the Marathon race on Saturday, an event which stipulates that each runner shall wear tramping boots weighing at least four pounds. The course, crossed the Fohangina river and Coal creek and led up to tho top of a ridge on the northern side of the river and back down a steep spur to tho junction of Coal creek and the Fohangina river, to finish at the Totara. Reserve. The time taken bv tho winner, R. Holmes (R.T.C.), was 23J minutes, being i|min. less thau tho time taken by last year’swinner. The Ruahine Tramping Club presented a silver cup called the “Ruahinc Trophy,” to be held by the winner of the championship. This was won by J. Simpson (R.T.C.). Miss M. walker (M.T.C.) won the ladies’ championship.

When rain commenced early on Sunday morning there was a wild scatter to the shelter of the tents by tho wouldbe hardy ones who had elected to sleep in the open. The programme was suspended at intervals during the day on account of passing showers and had finally to bo abandoned at 3 o’clock when heavy rain set iu. At tho conclusion Mr. M. Lewis presented the trophies to the winners.
