There was a gasp of astonishment at a meeting of the Hcathcote County Council when an application from a relief worker for permission to erect a tent on a section at tho foot of Hackthornc road, in tho fashionable suburb of Cashmere, was read, ‘ ‘He has certainly chosen a good locality in which to live," said a member. A representative of the riding said he had every sympathy with the applicant, but it was not a suitable placo for him to live in a tent as it was on the main road at the tram sop, and was right up against the tennis courts. There was no water or sewerage on the property. If the man selected a site not so much in the public eye ho would consider it. The motion that permission should be refused was carried. How scientific aid was invoked by the police w'ho sought to identify a man with a house theft came out in the Police Court at Auckland yesterday when Edward Macfarlano and Allan Edward Ross were charged with the stealing from a house in Mt. Eden of a shaving brush and a safety razor valued at ss. The owner of the house tho police stated, was able to identify Ross as one of two men ho saw leaving the place. The polico searched Macfarlane’s house and found a razor and brush, which Macfarlane asserted he had bought. The polico then took complainant to the Government Analyst, in w'hose presence complainant shaved. The analyst then microscopically examined the bristles and the soap on tho razor, and in evidenco yesterday said the bristles were consistent with those found on the razor in Macfarlano’s house. Evidence was given that Macfarlane could not have bought , tho razor where he said lie did. .Both men
