Women's Institutes

BULLS. The monthly meeting of the Bulls W.L -was held on November 12, about 00 members being present. In the absence of Mrs. Marumaru, Mrs. Hendry presided. An invitation was received from Sanson to the Institute birthday party. Mrs. J. S. Tricker was accorded thanks for a very interesting report of the council meeting held at Levin. It was decided to invite the North Wellington Federation to hold their annual meeting at Bulls in April next. A Christmas party will be held in the town halt' on Wednesday evening, December 12, children to wear fancy dress, and adults paper hats. Mrs. Hendry was elected to act on a concert committee in aid of the town hall piano. The coat hanger competition resulted: —Miss Wicks 1, Miss Tricker and Mrs. Button 2. Miss Grant, Federation president, gave a very interesting address on Institute work in general, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Next month’s competition will bo for the best novelty not to cost more than 2/6.

SANSON. There were twenty-six members present at the monthly meeting, presided over by Mrs. A. I\. Drew. Mrs. H. Masters was welcomed as a new member. Mrs. G. Drew gave a most instructive lecture on nursing and a demonstration of bandaging; this was all followed with very keen interest. Mrs. Pearce voiced appreciation, Mrs. Drew being accorded a hearty voto of thanks. The final arrangements were made for the birthday meeting which is being he I'd on Wednesday, 14th inst. Mrs. H. Masters and Miss E. Galbally tied for first place in the pantry competition. The winners of the best plate of shortbread were Mrs. Williams (senior), Miss P. Williams (junior). The hostesses for the evening were Mesdamcs Adams, Masters, Meyer and Miss G. Adam.

STANWAY The November meeting of the Stanwav Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Parsons (vice-president). Miss M. Guy and Miss J. Dunstuu were welcomed as new' members. A very interesting report of the council meeting held ai Levin was given by Mrs A. Marshall, delegate. Mrs E. E. Short and Mrs W. G. Short were welcomed, the former giving a most helpful and instructive demonstration on Ihe covering of chairs, and the latter a short talk on the making of Christmas gifts, the articles on exhibition being greatly admired. Both ladies were accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea'was served by the hostesses. Mesdamcs Graine, C. Christian, Cockburn and Miss J. Groves. Following tea, Mesdamcs Short kindly judged the competitions, in the senior division, the competition for the best sixpenny parcel ou the “bring and buy” stall, resulted: Mrs Duucan .1, Mrs Osborne 2; while the junior competition for the best article to cost not more Mian is 6d, resulted; Miss M. lloss-r 1, MissJ. Groves 2. The competition for both seniors and juniors for the December meeting is for the best frock to cost not more than as (3d. A Christmas stall’, conducted by Mrs Winder, should bo a great attraction, while the hostesses will be Mrs Groves, Miss Guy, Mrs and Miss Jefferies.

MARTON JUNCTION Mrs Gregory presided over a very bright and out Imsiuslic meeting of the Martou' ' JituC'tion Women’s institute Inst Wednesday, there being about one hundred Members and friends present. Mrs Heitipleman read' a. most informative report of the council meeting held at Levin lust month, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competition, -fur a. child’s’’School lunch, was judged by Miss Coleman, who explained how the points were awarded and alsu how lunches could be varied and made attractive without, losing their nutritious value. Mrs Gregory thanked Miss Coleman for .judging and for her helpful remarks'; The competition resulted: Mrs ITrankc 1, Mrs Hart 2, Mrs Thomas and Mrs J. Kendrick, equal, b. Miss B. Winter entertained the company with a solo, Mrs Bade accompanying. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mcsdames Gibson (chief). Tortuous, Bade, E. Foster, B. Williams, W. Gordon, A. Clark, and Winter, during which a “ general post” was hold to enable members to enjoy a social chat. A demonstration of floral work was given by Mrs Harris, of Turakina valley, who showed members how to wire the different flowers, also the foundation of rcaths, bouquets and posies, etc. Sho explained how dyed leaves and. painted berries can be used in decorating, and gave many useful hints on colour schemes and decorative work for show purposes. Mr* A. Siccfy' moved a hearty vote', of thanks to Mrs Harris for her helpful demonstration. The, next meeting will be held on .Monday, December «’>, and the competitions will be: (a) Best six roses from own. garden; (h) 21b jam jar of roses arranged for effort.

NIREAHA At the November meeting Mrs Petersen presided. Members wero instructed to grow three of their own seed potatoes in the potato-growing competition, Mrs G. Woodley to be in charge for the coming year. Mrs Petersen, delegate to the council meeting in Eketahuna, gave a most interesting report of the proceedings and also thanked members for their assistance at the produce stall’. Mrs J. Drysdale won the paper pulp competition and Mrs O’Neil, senr., the musical parcel game. On behalf -of the members, Mrs Petersen presented Mrs W. Woodley, who is leaving the district, with half a dozen tumblers, in appreciation of her services to the institute as a committee' member. Mrs Woodley suitably responded. The winners of the points prizes for 12 months were announced, Mrs Blewett being first, Mrs Thomasen second and Mrs G. Woodley third.
