Civil Engineers in Conference

annual meeting or NORTH WELLINGTON BRANCH OF N.Z.S.C.E.

Civil engineers from as far north as New Plymouth on the one side, Wairoa on the Hawke’s Bay side, from the Wairarapa, Manawatu, Horowhenua, and intermediate districts, aro in conference in Palmerston North at the present time, the occasion being the annual meeting of the North Wellington branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers.

Tko retiring president, Air J. E. Alcnzies, presided over tire opening session held last night. The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) opened the conference and extended a cordial welcome to the visitors. He added that in the rapid world changes that were taking place, civil engineers were destined to play a prominent part. Mew Zealand was lacing a new era and planning was going to play a very much, greater part in this new era than in those behind them. This must result from the increasing use of machinery. The engineer must become a greater factor in the planning demanded by social changes and it will be necessary to take into account human development and social evolution. The civil engineers of the Dominion realised their grave responsibilities and would live up to the traditions of their profession and of which they wore so proud. The Mayor trusted that the conference would be one of profit and pleasure and that tile visiting delegates would take away with them happy recollections of -their stay in Palmerston North.

It was decided to hold the next annual meeting at Napier. Mr A. Dinnic (Napier) was elected president for the ensuing year and Mr 11. L. Benjamin (Napier) secretary. The council comprise Messrs J. B. Hughes (Palmerston. North), G. W. B. Eowson (Napier), O. G. Thornton (Gis- 1 borne), L. P. Bow (Wanganui), A. G. Harris (Wairoa) and P. Keller (Stratford).
