Favoured wltlFideal conditions tho official opening of the Ashhurst Tennis Club attracted a largo number of enthusiasts, including visitors from the Poliangina and Bunnythorpe clubs. The president, Mr. W. N. Brewer, in declaring tho courts open for play, expressed pleasure at the number of new members coming forward and with the standard of play definitely improving, he was looking forward to linking up with the association next year. The club captain, Mr. R. Potts, maintained a good control over the games and was largely responsible for the success of the afternoon. Afternoon tea was served by tho ladies’ committee. In perfect weather the opening- day of the Ashhurst Croquet Club was held on Monday, an enjoyable afternoon being spent in various competitions. The president, Mrs. W: N. Brewer, in declaring the greens open for play, asked Mrs. H. B. Goertz to drive the first ball through the hoop. Competitions were won by Mrs. Parkes (Palmerston North), ladder; Mrs. J. H. Sumner, Aunt Sally; Mrs. F. A. Dunstall, angles; Mrs. H. Fenwick, French; Mrs. K. D. Davis, golf. Rifle Shooting. Tho Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club held a sweepstake meeting on Rabom- Day, 25 competitors taking part, including three ladies. Weather conditions were very good, the light being very steady, while a light, wind did not effect the shooting except at tho GOO yards where cqgeful watching was necessary. Tho first two places in the aggregate were a triumph for veterans W. G. Romley and W. Algie who shot consistently throughout and deserved to win.
