Maori Touring Team Beats Southland

BRIGHT RUGBY WITNESSED Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. In one of the most brilliant Rugby matches seen hero in recent years, the Maoris defeated Southland by 24 to 20 to-day. There was a large attendance and the ground was dry, though a high wind made overhead conditions difficult. The Maoris, with superior pace all round, threw the ball about in bright fashion. Southland played the tourists at their own game, but lacked the dash and thrust of the Maoris.

Wellington Beat West Coast LOSERS’ PACK GIVES GOOD DISPLAY Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The first West Coast representative Rugby team ever to play in Wellington was defeated at Athletic Park to-day by 14 points to 8 in a liard game, which was devoid of frills. There was a very small attendance. The day was fino, With a strong northerly wind, which proved a big handicap to the team playing against it. The West Coast pack gave Wellington a lesson in what hard, honest forward play means, and if they had been supported by good backs, they would have won. They completely dominated the game until well on in the second spell, when a good deal of the sting had gone from their play and the Wellington backs turned to account some of tl 1 j many chances presented to them. Coast led at the interval by S to 3, Thomson and Fong scoring tries, one of which Gilbert converted. Ooulston scored a try for Wellington. In the second spell the scorers were A. Wright (2) and Upchurch, Lilburne converting one.
