GERALDINE

THE ACCEPTANCES,

A SERIOUS FIRE

PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY

The Ueraldino Racing Club’s annual meeting opens to-day and will be concluded on Saturday. Good fields are engaged to-day and the following horses may command respect in their engagements, tho betting system in operation being the single pool: . First Hurdles: Black Duke, Free Air.

Ohapi Hack Handicap: Rebel Chief, Theatin, Impossible,

Geraldine Cup: Cleaner, Polydora, Davolo.

Geraldine Trot: De'Soto, Don Wrack, Agility. Squatters’ Handicap: Dismiss, Knockfin, Gaysome.

Raukapuka Handicap: Sam Smith, Weatherly, Colossian. Orari Trot: Royal de Oro, Guy Mauritus, Sago King. Belfield. Handicap: Silver Sight, Red Boa, Sam Smith,'

The veteran Trentham trainer J. iW. Lowe had the misfortune to crush two of his fingers when a train door was closed on his hand at Wanganui last Saturday evening. ■s><s>s><s> S. Lonoghue has "been invited to ride in. America this winter, but, as that rider lilies a real spell from Taeing during the cessation from flat racing in England, the chances are he will not accept. <S> <§► <s> <s> Otto Schmidt, one of Germany’s best riders, recorded his-.ldOOth win last month. Allowing that horsemanship in (Germany is not up to the standard of some other countries, it is a fine record. <S> <s> <s> <& The programme for the New Zealand Cup meeting to be held on November 3, 5, 7 and 10 has been issued, and the all-round increase in states will make it popular with owners. No stake has been fixed under £2OO, and no fewer than six of the races carry stakes of £SOO or better. BLANDFORD BLOOD The huge price paid for Windsor Lad gives some idea of the demand • for Blandford blood in England to-day. This is confirmed by the experience of a number of New Zealand breeders who have'been inquiring for sons of Blandford as likely sires for the Dominion. Prices have been of the very tall variety at which business; i 3 hardly likely to eventuate, for the prospects of a commensurate return at the present time in New Zealand are not. good. REMINDERS. Nominations for the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting and first forfeits for the Great Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes will bo due at 5 p.rn. on Friday next. SOMETHING UNtrSUAL It rarely happens that two leading patrons of any stable die within less than a week of each other, but that occurred recently in England. Mr. W. Kincaid Lennox and Mr. W. R. Smith, whoso horses were trained by Dobson Peacock, died about the middle of July. Mr. Kincaid Lennox bred Glen side (Grand. National winner) and Twelve Pointer (Cambridgeshire), while hlr. Smith raced Heronslea, ohe -of Eng land's'. best modern sprinters.

At Rockingham Park (Salem, New Hampshire) in July, two 50-stall stables, or barns, as they call them in America, wero burnt, and six horses killed. It was d horso that gave the alarm, neighing. loudly ’and making such ; a noise in his stall that ho awakened one of the stable hands. The estimated value of the stables destroyed was £20,000. THE AMERICAN RACEHORSE A New York contributor to a London ppper says that the degeneration of the American rncehorso is readily understood ■when it is realised that practically 70 per cent, of all the races run in the United States are for cheap platers, and the fact that races over a respectable distance of ground are practically non-existent. Of the 36 flat races, run at live of America’s leading courses on July 2, the longest was at nine furlongs, and while there were two at eight and a-half furlongs, the remaining 33 were at a mile or shorter, 23 being at six furlongs or less. FAST TRAVELLING Up. to the end of July the fastest mild and .a quarter, recorded in America this';year was 2min 2 2-ssec put up by the three-year-old colt, Riskulus, in winning the Arlington Handicap at Arlington Park (Chicago) on July 21. Phar Lap’s record for Australia and New Zealand is 2min 2-lsec. Riskulus,;,who carried 7.8, won by a head from Hadagal (5.2), also a thrcc-year-old. The first half-mile was run in 4Sscc, and the mile in Imin 30 3-5 sec. THE CENTURY REACHED It was on a favourite -that Gordon Richards reached his 100 wins this season. He scored on Tho Covenanter in the Millburn Selling Plate, at Sandown Park on July 20. Richards did not repay'following for the remainder of the day, not.ono of his five mounts getting a place. Ho did not win a race the two previous days. Up to July 20 of last year his wins

totalled 126, so that tho odds aro now much against his reaching , his 1933 total of 259 wins from 975 mounts.

NOT BRACKETED

I In tho two good two-year-old races credited him this season, the Aga Khan's second string was successful. This has caused a little soreucss on the part of totalisator backers, as horses in the same ownership are not bracketed on the machine in England. It is now contended that the plan should bo adopted, though many are opposed to it on the score that when a backer takes the risk of supporting an owner’s outsider he should benefit if it wins. In France, horses in the same ownership are bracketed, and it is stated that the Aga Khan would not be among those to objoet to'similar procedure iu England.
