School Committee.

Mr. Best (chairman) presided at the monthly meeting of the Shannon School Committee, there being also present Messrs Campbell (secretary), Harper, Guerin, Radford, Warman and Coates. Mr. McDonald (head teacher) was also in attendance. Tho chairman pointed out that owing to the resignation of Mr Gardner from the committee it was necessary to appoint a new member and ho had pleasure in nominating Mr. Bass. As no further nominations were forthcoming Mr. Bass was duly elected. In connection with the matter of a fancy dress bail for the children, Mr. McDonald stated that it was proposed to hold it early in October. Correspondence was received In connection with the proposed District High School for Shannon and tho matter would he discussed at tho next meeting of the board. The committee was anxious to have sufficient guarantee from parents to start a secondary school and it appeared that there would be sufficient children to start with' two teachers. The time lost by pupils at present was considerable as travelling by train was a serious handicap to any pupil. It was very difficult for a pupil to gain a matriculation certificate under present conditions, and as there appeared to bo sufficient inducement for a High School, it was hoped that such would soon be ail accomplished fact. Funds for the dental clinic were urgently needed and it was decided to raise some of tho funds at least by a bottle drive. The management of tho local theatre offered 10 free passes to tho children who collected the most bo f tles and to this the committee added another five. Tho head teacher reported that the roll number was now 315 and tho average attendance 03 per cent. Sundry repairs needed carrying l out ana these were left to members of tho coinmittee to deal with. Mr. Guerin stated that Mr. Selwyn, of Palmerston North, had offered to conduct a. community sing for the school at any time. Tills matter was held over until a later date. Tennis Clud. At the annual meeting of tho Shannon Tennis Club there was a poor attendance. The following officers were elected; —President, Mr. F. X. Thurston; vice-presi-dents, Messrs f?. D. Graham, A. M. Johnston, Miss I* Finnerty and* Miss A. Moynihan. The question of top-dressing the courts was left in the hands of tho committee to decide which tender would be accepted. It is hoped that an early start will he made with the work and with good weather conditions the courts should be in, readiness well up to the usual opening date. Tho committee views with concern the conduct of certain local children in trespassing on the courts and causing damage to tho club’s property. Borough Council.

The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Tho Mayor (Mr. E. Butt) presided. In attendance were Crs. J. Curran, scm\, Roach, Mason, J. Curran, junr., Thwaites, Clayton and Lind. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Hyde. Correspondence was received from the town clerk of Nelson, staling that at a recent meeting a resolution had been passed recording an emphatic protest against the provisions contained in section 17, sub-sections 2 and 3, of the Transport Law Amendment Act, 1933. From Mr. M. Roberts, applying for a load of metal at the entrance to his residence. —Granted. From the secretary Horowhenua Rugby Union, forwarding £2 Os 6d as 10 per cent, of gross gato takings at the Domain. From the managing-sec-retary of tho Palmerston North Hospital Board, removing the erroneous idea said 1_ vive been circulated that the Hospital Boards generally were not now spending any more on relief than they were before the depression. A lengthy statement was attached showing expenditure from 1924 to 1933. A further-statement regarding expenditures of the Palmerston North Hospital Board for the year ending March 31 was also enclosed. From tho secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, giving tho proceedings of the conference regarding unemployment held at Wellington on August 22. The Shannon borough foreman reported that the tins in the rubbish dump had been cleared away from neighbouring property and poplar troes planted for protection. The Domain had been harrowed. The first cutting by the horsemower had been made Inside tho cycle track and the outside had been cut by hand-mowers. He would suggest that the goal posts and hockey nets be removed, after which the Domain would be In good order for the summer. Tho 7-incli fluted spikes had been procured and the planking nailed down on the bridges in Thompson street, and hand-rails put in order. The picking in of the sides of street in Stafford street had been completed to the Dairy Company’s buildings, while similar work was in progress on roads in the north end of Flimmer terrace. Fescue and rough grass had been grubbed off Vance and Vogel streets. Tho filling in of water channels in Plimmer terrace had been carried out and about 30 chains of water channels had been cleaned out. Maintenance work had been carried out at the cemetery plots and tho Domain. The water works had been inspected and tlie pipe line scoured out and rubbish collected and carted to tho depot. Considerable discussion took place regarding the suggested installation of a suitable clock for the town. It was pointed out that the present system was inadequate and that something should be done. It was agreed that a clock be secured and placed in a suitable position. Regarding discussion on allocation for unemployment purposes in the Shannon district, members of the council stated that representation bad been made to the member for the district, but although two such letters had been forwarded no repi.v bad been received. It was decided that further letters be forwarded and the member be asked why nothing had been done in tlio matter, even to the extent of replying to correspondence.
