Many of them arc riel merchants or landowners, but all av rived in a deplorable condition. No ex planation had been given tkam for I heir expulsion. Thore was an air of mystery aboui the whole affair, but is was generally thought that it was a preparation fot carrying out a plan of extensive fortifications in the regions affected. The Jewish community of Turkey constitutes a, rich and important commercial element.
