At the close of business last night the sterling rate on New York was 5.011; the recovery has led to a further fall of 4d in price of gold to 140 s Old. .The price included a premium of 2s over the dollar which at the time of to-day's gold prico fixing was 5.02; and 4id over the franc which was then quoted at 75. Later the New York rate moved to 5.02 7-S, and Paris to 75 1-IG. Business on Ihc Stock .Exchange continues restricted. A feature of to-day's markets was the further advance in the prico of 3) per cent. British War Loan, which moved to a now high level of £lO5. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. JAPAN LEADS THE MARKET. SYDNEY, Sept. 5. At the wool sales to-day SSSG bales were offered, of which 0G47 were sold at auction, also 5557 bales were sold privately. The market was unchanged from the previous day. The Japanese again were the principal operators, with good support from Yorkshire and local users, and occasionally from the Continent. Greasy merino sold to IGpl for seven bales from Copmanhurst, New England.
