Women's Institutes

POHANGINA Members of the Poliangina W.I. held their June meeting in the Public Hall. The weather was glorious and there was a good attendance. Mrs Palmer presided. Community singing occupied the first part of the programme, Miss J. Sinclair presiding at the piano. Mrs Blixt read a very interesting report of the annual council meeting of the Northern Wellington Federation and it was followed with the keenest interest. The winners of the competition (design for Institute Banner) wore as follow: Seniors: Mrs Sinclair 1, Mrs J. Moar 2, Mrs A. Palmer 3; juniors: Miss Sinclair 1, Miss Janet Howell 2. Mrs Thomas gavo a wonderful demonstration on the making of soft toys and showed some splendid specimens of her work. With the aid of Airs Baylis she kindly judged the quince jelly, and awarded the points as follow: —Seniors: Airs J. Moar 1, Airs Drummond 2, Airs Harland 3; juniors: Miss Tews 1, Aliss .T. Howell 2, Aliss Watson 3. The market stall did brisk business, Mrs A. Balmcr soon soiling her stock. Afternoon tea was served by Alesdames Blixt and Galvin and Aliss J. Blixt, and concluded a very cnjoyabic afternoon. HALCOMBE At the Juno meeting of the Halcombe W. 1., Mrs Aynsley presided over a good attendance of members. Miss Alerritt made excellent and comprehensive arrangements for the pantry stall at Alanawatu A. & P. Show. Airs Faulding gave a very instructive demonstration on the preparing and sowing of seed boxes and kindly donated the box to be sold for Institute funds. Airs Bayliss, delegate to the annual council meeting, read a detailed and interesting report. Airs J. E. Fergusson was winner of the competition for chutney. A vote of thanks was passed to the hostesses, Mesdames L. Davies, R. Anderson and Bayliss. At the next meeting members will knit peggy squares and are asked to remember contributons to the Baby Hamper for the group. The competition will be for the best articlo made from a llourbag, 1/- allowed for trimmings. AIARTON JUNCTION Marton Junction W.I. celebrated its drst birthday in the Presbyterian Sunday school hall in June at the Junction. The hail was filled to overflowing, visitors being present from Turakina, Silverhope, Bulls and Halcombe Institutes, making an attendance of over two hundred. The president, Mrs Gregory, extended a welcome to ad visitors and introduced the Alayoress (Mrs Purnell), Aliss Af. Grant, president of the Northern Wellington Federation of Womens’ Institutes; Airs Will, of Rongotea; and Airs Drew, of Sanson, members of the federation committee, and Mrs Hammond, cxpresident of Alarton Junction W.I. Proceedings opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship arid tho repeating of the Creed. An apology for absence was received from the Afayor, who was unavoidably absent. A bouquet was presented to Aliss Grant and sprays to Alesdames Purnell, Drew, Will, Gregory, Hammond, Humphrey and Winstaniey. Six girls from the Alaori Girls’ College gavo two delightful items which were followed by a sketch entitled ‘‘Hope Never Dies” by the Drama Circle. Two solos were rendered by Airs R. G. Eade, after which Aliss Grant gavo a short but interesting address on institute matters. At the conclusion of an enjoyable afternoon tea Airs Gregory called on Airs Purnell to light tho candle on the birthday cake, and Airs Hammond to cut tho first slice. The cake, which was two-tiered and beautifully iced, was tho work of Airs 11. J. Matthews. Birthday greetings were received from visiting institutes and a hand-worked cloth presented to the institute as a birthday gift from Mrs Hammond. The Drama Circle concluded its, programme with several items. A paper apron competition was judged during tho afternoon and prizes awarded to Airs Eaglo for the most original design and Airs Slight for the prettiest. Tho usual monthly competition was held, the winners being Airs Davison 1 and 2, and Airs A. Watts 3. Votes of thanks were accorded .to all those who had in any

way contributed toward the success of this happy function. The next meeting will be held on July 4, when the competition will be for the best article mado from a 501 b flour bag, one skiding being allowed for cottons, etc., for trimming.

LINTON Linton W.I. held its annual homo industry show on Monday last, the function being a great success and the quality of the entries of a very high standard.
