Nireaha

From Our Own Correspondent. Messrs M. Fafeita, T. Goss and H. It. Nordell, of Nlreaha, are on a motor holiday via the Auckland province. Miss M. T. Bell, Nireaha, has recently returned from a holiday spent at Wliangarei, Helensville, Auckland and Ohakune. Miss A. M. Bourke recently spent a few days’ holiday with her sister, Mrs. K. Payne, Nireaha, when en route from Dunedin to New Plymouth. Mr. H. J. W. Pryde, Nlreaha, is spending a few days in Wellington. Mrs. C. W. Hercock, Nireaha, is spending a few days in Wellington. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Goss, Nlreaha, will regret to learn that their daughter Jean has been ordered to bed for a fortnight, the cause being the after effects of influenza. Mr. Allan Faulkner, of Ballance, Pallia tua, was the recent guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. Stewart, Nireaha, during a weekend. Mr. R. C. Holyoake, Nireaha, is on holiday in the Waikato district. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Jjaysh, Nireaha, are spending a holiday with their son, Mr. T. Daysh, Pahiatua. Mr. B. Bliss, of Carterton, was a recent visitor to friends in Nireaha prior to his departure on holiday to Australia. Mr. G. Welch, .Nireaha, was recently on a short visit to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Drysdale, of Levin, were recent visitors to relatives in Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Mason and daughter recently spent a few days’ holiday in Wellington. Miss Peggy Drysdale has returned from a recent holiday spent at Lower Hutt, Wellington. Miss I. Spring has returned from a holiday spent at Dannevirke. The friends of. Mr. W. W. Drysdale will regret to hear that he had the misfortune to injure a bone near the eye when playing football in the match between Hukanui and Nireaha. He is now making a good recovery. Many farmers from the Nireaha district have been to the Manawatu Winter Show, and very favourable reports on its excellence have been expressed. ■The local cheese factory ceased operations for the 1933-34 season on Tuesday, the 12th instant. Recent improvements to the grounds of the Nireaha school include the asphalting of an ara large enough to provide a basketball ground for the children. Contrary to the usual weather experienced in the Nireaha district, recent days have been quite spring-like, with a very pleasant absence of winds, and local farmers have taken the opportunity to top-dress their pastures, which work was somewhat delayed owing to the had weather experienced in the latter part of May. A pure white bird of about the size of a sparrow Is to be seen at the edge of the native bush in the Atea district. There is not a patch of colour in the plumage of the bird, and competent authorities state that the bird is a New Zealand tomtit, the plumage as seen being due to a freak of Nature. Snow is now to be seen on the top of Mount Ruapai and the neighbouring mountains which are situated to the south of the Nireaha valley. Probably four months will elapse before the snow will disappear under the strength of the rays of the sun. Rabbits during the summer became plentiful in the Nireaha district, and If left unchecked will no doubt become a nuisance. As, however, quite a number of Nireaha farmers have in recent times procured greyhounds and other sporting dogs, brer rabbit does not find life at present quite so placid as In the past. Recently during one day a few local residents with their sporting dogs were responsible for 36 rabbits in this district. The recently formed Ping Pong Club Is now going strongly and every Tues- 1

day evening a very enjoyable time is spent by those interested in this game. The Nireaha Miniature Rifle Club was re-formed this year after a lapse of one year due to the depression. Fairly good shooting has been recorded, and the shoot takes place every Thursday evening. The matches for the Bush district championship will be held on Wednesday evenings. Shoots commence as from Wednesday next and will continue for a space of six weeks. The membership of the local club is approximately 30 which is quite satisfactory. Fortnightly Bible class meetings are held in the local Anglican Church, and there is always a very excellent attendance of members. Since our last report, Nireaha have played Hukanui, whom they defeated by 3 goals to 1, and also Ilamua, to whom they lost by 5 goals to 3. Since our last report Nireaha Rugby team has played Eketahuna Old Boys and Hukanui in the junior division of the Bush competition. To the surprise of all, considering Nireaha were without the services of some of their foremost players, they defeated Old Boys by three points to nil. W. Drysdale kicked a goal from a penalty awarded shortly after the beginning of the game. All the Nireaha boys played well and kept the ball with the forwards, not giving their opponents the chance to make use of their back row. It was due to these tactics that Nireaha won the day. Old Boys afterwards lodged a protest with the union

because Nireaha played a man allegedly a member of another club. Nireaha replied by pointing out that Eketahuna were playing an old member of tho now defunct Nireaha senior team who had not received his transfer from the Nireaha Club. The matter was finally ironed out at a meeting of the union, which found that if the points raised were stressed, all the teams in the Bush district were at fault according to the rules of the union. It was decided that Eketahuna and Nireaha could if so desired reply, but this Eketahuna did not wish to do, and as their secretary pointed out, it was mainly from the viewpoint of making all clubs realise the rules that their protest was lodged. No doubt the publicity given to this matter will have a good effect on the various clubs, and will tend to make the responsible members heed the rules of tlie union. In the match against Huaknui which was played at I-lukanui, Nireaha were successful by six points to nil, these being obtained by M. Stewart and R. Shannon. Once again tho Nireaha forwards bore the brunt of the battle, while the backs also contributed their share to the success of the team. The Nireaha thirds recently played Ballance, suffering defeat by 29 points to 3, and on Wednesday last they played Woodville at Woodville, being defeated by 9 points to 3.
