SHOW DRAWS TO EXCELLENT CONCLUSION

Many Attractions on Final Day Finishing with ono of tho best con eluding days in years, tho Manawatu and "West* Coast A. and P. Association’s winter fixture terminated on Saturday with a well-varied programme. A feature of the day was tho buckjumping exhibition, which thrilled an expectant throng of townsmen, while a band contest and a dog parade also drew their patrons. Taming the “Bronchos” Tho miniature rodeo drew a large crowd round tho oval at an early hour. That the event was popular, too, with competitors was shown by tho fact that no less than 23 riders tried their skill. Tho horses —which had been imported from tho Main Trunk area—wero mettlesome, flighty creatures, full of spirit and capers, and won the ad miration of the crowd. They were led into the oval' and tied to a post, barebacked. Then tho competitor took charge, being required to saddle his ■mount before casting off. As was to bo expected, few came through the ordeal without being unsaddled. The horses, impatient of tho new role they ..were called upon to play, experimented ..with every conceivablo prance in an endeavour to win freedom. Despite the frequency of tho sjiills, there wore no casualties, although failure to at■'lach tho saddle securely cost more than one contestant a spill. .... Mr T. Lupton (Waverley) adjudicated, and the exhibitions he admired most wero those of:— G. Johansen (Taihapo) .. .. 1 J. Davis (Mercury Bay) .... 2 A. Young (Taihapo) .. .. 3 P. O’Began (Kairanga) .... 4 DOG PARADE An added attraction in the afternoon was a dog parade, staged under ' the auspices of tho Manawatu Kennel ' Club, with Mr A. T. Bedingfield as judge. Prentices’ smooth-coated fox terrier Flyaway. Commenting on the parade, Mr Bedingfleld said it had been arranged at short notice at the invitation of the ■A. and P. Association. Otherwise the Kennel Club would not have held another fixture so close to tho June 3 parade. The largo number of entries was therefore most gratifying. The individual dogs in nearly all classes were well-known winners at major shows. Mr Prontieo’s entry, judged the best dog on parade, was a splendid typo of smooth-haired fox terrier, very representative of tho breed. This win for an importer and breeder in this breed of many years’ standing, was most popular. Mrs Lacey’s cocker spaniel' was a very fine bitch which hhs"wOn many prizes. Mr Johansen’s collie was another dog with many victories to. his credit, and was also most typical. Mr Garner’s bulldogs would win jn any company. Dogs ■in the challenge classes, both puppy and open, had been hard to separate. WITH THE BANDSMEN Under the direction of Messrs B. Abraham and 11. Jackson, a band con test was held during the afternoon and evening, greatly enhancing the merits of the show. Mr J. G. Osborne, secretary of tho New Zealand Brass Bdhfls’Association, was present. Mr T. Goodall, of Wellington, adjudicated in "the quickstep, selection, and hymn test, while the solos and quartettes were judged by Mr A. J, Berryman. Palmerston North. Members of the Defence Force judged the marching of the bands. Miss Thora Rodden, A.T.C.L., L.T.C.L., L.A.8., was official accompanist.
