ANDREWS AND MAHFROY EOTH BEATEN. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph —Copyright. PRAGUE, June 7. At Prague, in tho Davis Cup' match ■between New Zealand and Czechoslovakia Hecht (Czechoslovakia) defeated Malfroy (New Zealand), o—4, o—l, 4—6, 6—l. Menzel (Czechoslovakia) boat Andrews (New Zealand), 6 —l, 6 —3, 6 —3. Malfroy, playing one of tho most improved Europeans, stonowalled in the first set, but his length was poor, and ho was inclined to go to the net on short, slow balls, with tho result that Hecht repeatedly passed him. Hecht also outlobbed tho New Zealander, whose smashing was not severe and his backhand unreliable, but who scored with excellent forehand drives. Malfroy improved in the second set and won many net duels. Ho was trailing o—20 —2 in tho third set, but returning to net attack, led 4—2 when Hecht, displaying mastery of every stroke, went ahead, while in tho fourth sot Hecht kept his opponent running by cleverly alternating the length of his placements. Menzel was at top form against Andrews, and won aces with smashes and net attacks, everything coming off for Menzel, while Andrews, unlucky and unable to find his real game, doublefaulted at vital moments, but fought pluckilv, many games going to deuce. Australia v. Japan WINS FOR CRAWFORD AND McGrath. LONDON, Juno 7. In the Davis Cup match between Australia aud Japan, Crawford defeated Fujikura, 6—3, G—3, 11—9. McGrath defeated Yamagishi, 2—6, 7 —5, 6—2, 6 —4. The Davis C'up singles were played at Eastbourne in glorious weather. Yamagishi surprised McGrath with speed in his shots in. the first set. The Japanese led 2 —o and 4 —3 in the second set, but McGrath, volleying brilliantly after sending high, bouncing balls to Yamagishi’s forehand, won the set. Thenceforward McGrath was more reliable, and forced Yamagishi into errors notably on the forehand which lost its sting. McGrath’s drives were of excellent length, and towards the end ho volleyed superbly. Crawford was unusually lively and accurate against Fujikura. Tho Australian sent dazzling drives down tho sidelines, and forced his opponent into errors. The match was largely a baseline duel in. which Crawford was steadier and more brilliant. Fujikura led 6—3 in the third set through Crawford relaxing prematurely. Tho Australian then put more fire into his shots, and angled his drives mere acutely to take the set and match.
