SPLENDID DISPLAY OF BIRDS IN THE CITY

Manawatu Club Stages Its Annual Exhibition The first annual show to he hold by the Manawatu Canary and Foreign Bird Club was opened in the Majestic Buildings, Broadway, Palmerston North, yesterday afternoon. With Auckland and other outsido ccnties strongly represented in a total of over 200 entries, the fixture is to continue to-day. The centrally situated show-place and the well-arranged benching of the birds were features which were appreciated. The exhibition, which is being held under the rules of the New Zealand Federation of Cago Bird Ci'ubs, has created much interest among fanciers, and is well patronised at'all sessions. Fleming (New Plymouth), while Mrs. L. ooliin3 (Now Plymouth) made the awards in tho classes for budgerigars, British, foreign, mule, hybrid and miscellaneous sections. Officials controlling tho show are as follow: —Patron, Mr. A. E. Mansford; president, Mr. A. W. Just; vice-presi-dents, Messrs H. G. Bagnall, J. A. Bell, A. M. Davies, H. E. Edmunds, E. J. Hicken and E. J. Watson; hon. secretary, Mr. E. B. Watson. Stewards’ duties were carried out by Messrs Hicken, E. B. Watson, F. Bonberg, Edmunds, Just and H. J. Bott. Opening Ceremony Held. The president (Mr. A W. Just) art, the official opening ceremony, said the club had started 15 months ago with 14 members. Now .there were 40. Tho object of the club was to encourage tho keeping of cago birds under proper conditions, and to make available information to fanciers. The. club was affiliated with the New Zealand Cage Sird Federation, and was progressing very actively. Mr. G. Fleming, who judged the canary section, said that, though the entries were not as largo as they might have been, the quality of tho exhibits, could not bo surpassed in any centre of the Dominion. The budgerigars were a very lino section of birds. Children should be encouraged to keep pets, ho said, and cago birds were both interesting and attractive. Mr. J. Hodgens (Deputy-Mayor) in officially opening t’Jie show on behalf of tho Mayor, welcomed tho visiting exhibitors, particularly thoso who had forwarded birds from long distances.
