SCOUT NOTES

(By "Totara.") ! 6th Palmerston Worth (Northern) Troop. The troop committee js very active and has a lengthy programme of activities in view. The Scouts are entertaining the parents at a parents’ evening on Friday week, and the following day they propose to conduct a "bottle drive." THE PRESIDENT’S -MESSAGE INCREASE IN SCOUTING In the absence, owing to illness, of Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell, Lord Hampton, the Chief Commissioner of the Boy Scouts’ Association, presided over the annual meeting of the Council at Imperial Headquartors. H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught, president of the Association, sent, the following message:— "Owing to my being.unable to attend tho annual meeting of the Headquarters Council, I send as usual my warmest greetings to all present, and wish them every success in this New Year. I hope that tho year 1934 may follow in the footsteps of all past years, which have shown a solid advance in tho great objects of the Boy Scout movement. "The year 1933 has well maintained those great, traditions, and notwithstanding bad times, Boys Scouts have steadily increased in numbers, showing an increase of 2956 in the United Kingdom, and of 17,819 in the Empire, making a total of 871,025 British Scouts, the grand world's total now being over two and a-quarter millions. This is indeed something to be proud of. “I am particularly gratified to i'earn of the success of last year’s great jamboree at Godollo, in Hungary, at which 23,000 Scouts attended, representing 34 countries, “I wish to convey congratulations to the Chief Scout, and all who were responsible, on the great, success that attended this new experiment in developing international friendship, by taking 700 officers of tho Boy Scout and Girl Guide movements to visit the Scouts and Guides of eight countries around the Baltic. "I rejoice to hear of a similar cruise which will take 700 officers, to visit the Scouts and Guides of six countries round tho Mediterranean, which, I am sure, will bo greatly appreciated, especially by the French Scouts. "I understand, too, that Australia is preparing a jamboree, for tho nations of the Pacific Coast, at tho end of this year. "All these facts go to show the great vitality of our movoment, which is doing so much to encourage peace and harmony among the rising generations of the civilised world. "(Signed) ARTHUR, President, Boy Scouts’ Association." Proposing the adoption of the annual report, Lord Hampton said it would bo idle to pretend that they wero not meeting in the shadow of great anxiety. They probably knew that the Chief Scout had had a setback, and was not so well. They prayed that ho would live for many years to come to inspiro and guide them. The Council and the County Commissioners present for their conference sent a joint message to the Chief Scout: "Members of tho Council and County Commissioners send loyal and affectionate greetings.’’ Continuing, Lord Hampton said that thoy all agreed with H.R.H. tho Duke of Connaught that the last year had been one of very steady progress in making personal contacts throughout the world of Scouting.
