Mid-week Hockey

STANDARD OF PLAY VARIES WIDELY On a dry field, the Manawatu Hockey Association’s mid-week fixtures were continued yesterday afternoon at the Sportsground. With a representative game looming close, players kept up with the play in pleasing fashion, although “sticks” and offside still obtruded to mar the work of the less experienced players. SENIOR GAMES. Massey College £ v. Broadway 1. Massey College played splendid hockey throughout, entirely outplaying their opponents. Way scored three times and Suckling once. For Broadway D. O’Brien scored the only goal. College displayed superb stick work, and also followed in well. Broadway, on the contrary, were bad offenders for sticks, with Hollier almost notorious. Bell also came into play offside quite often. .Messrs Voss and Byers umpired the game. Phoenix 8 v. Palmerston 0. Phoenix overran Palmerston, piling up goals with comparative ease. They were superior in all departments, cooperating well in attack and defence. Lundy, who led the scoring, notched no less than five goals, whilo .J. Morgan was responsible for the remainder. It was crisp hockey, that would have been more entertaining if less onesided. Messrs McLachlan and Blackbourn were the umpires. P.D.C. Draw With Feilding. Feilding, appearing in the competition for the first time, played a Stirling game, drawing the issue with P.D.C. in a ding-dong tussle. Timo and again the opposing vanguards swept the field, s only to be despoiled of the ball at the critical moment by an aggressive goalie. It was a good exhibition. Umpires were Messrs Levy and Brown. C. 0.8. 4 v. Services 2. C. 0.8. ran true to form against Combined Services, for after the teams stood level at the interval, they ran into the lead and stayed there in the second half of the game. For the losers Monteith and McGavin scored, and for C. 0.8. Hoare, Bentley, Sutton and Malcolm Smith. Messrs Blackbourn and Levy were in charge. JUNIOR. Broadway 8 (Watson 3, Paske 2 and Hancox) beat Phoenix B I (Caughlan). Messrs D. Wilton and I. Gerrand were umpires. In the other junior fixture Combined Services beat C. 0.8. B, 4 —o. REFEREES ON TRIAL. During the games, Messrs Blackbourn, Levy and McLachlan (who have passed the theory examination) were tested for the practical division of their New Zealand referees’ badge.
