Restoration of Cut

K AIR AN G A COUNTY COUNCIL AGREES TO REPLACEMENT MEN GIVEN AN EXTRA DAY At yesterday’s annual meeting of the Kairanga County Council it was agreed to restore the 5 per cent, cut made last, year in respect to the clerk and acting engineer. This matter was dealt with when the estimates for the year ending March 31, 1935, were being considered. It was unanimously resolved to restore the 5 per cent, cut to the county clerk and the acting engineer.

In regard to the men employed it was stated that they were at present working a five-day week for £2 15s, and it was suggested by the chairman (Mr. D. Collis) that they be allowed to go back to the old system of six days per week. This was adopted and means now that the men will be given an extra day’s work or a rise of lls per week. They also have the additional advantage of cottages, land and firewood.

The foreman’s wages, it was resolv--ed, should be increased by 5s per week. These increases will operate immediately. When the question of increasing the amount to councillors was mooted the meeting resolved not to proceed with the matter. Mr. Collis also requested that his £IOO grant for travelling expenses be reduced. A proposal that it be brought down by' £25 was then adopted and members eulogised the action of the chairman, who, it was held, was entitled to the full amount despite his desire to have it reduced.
