Winter Racing at Wanganui To-day

Opening of Steeplechase Meeting

Big Fields are Engaged

Particularly good fields Have been carded for first day events at tlie Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting, which opens to-day, and with quality horses engaged the meeting promises to be one of the best held by the club during recent years. The programme will be entered upon at noon and the concluding event is timed to start at 4.20 p.m. The single pool system of betting will be in operation, first and second dividends only being paid.

Trial Hack,

Tho oponing event is the Trial Hack, which, will be fought out over 7£ furlongs. There aro 13 acceptors, including Full Throttlo, Leo Colossus, Argument, Tudor, Do Trop, McHeath and Snowball, who havo all shown ability to gallop. Mere is a possibility' of a surprise, but tho public may elect to go for Leo Colossus, Argument . and Full Throttle. Winter Oats. Next on the list is the Winter Oats, with a number of fino sprinters engaged, last year’s winner, The Tiger, being a light-weight. Royal Hunting, a winner at Wanganui in February, has pr.ido of placo on 9.4 should not rulo him out of calculations. View Halloo (8.13) and Souchong (8.10) aro next, but they may bo passed over for others further down the list. Pomp is in with a handy weight, and as he has been racing well and is on his homo track, he may be one of the favourites. Good Hunting won at Pahiat.ua, and he has shown a liking for the Wanganui course. Koval Bengal won at his last start, While Princess Doreen showed a return to form at the Tecent Pahiatua meeting. If she has gone on the right way since, she will bo one of tho fancied division to-day. Playground can go in the mud, and The Tiger went well at Egmont, so that tho issue is likely to bo very open. Three that may appeal are Pomp, Princess Doreen, Good Hunting. Grandstand Steeples. Seven havo accepted for tho Grandstand Steeplechase, an' 1 Kiotous and Manuiri nre likely to be in demand. Tunbridge won the Marton Steeples, but the effort was not very convincing, and the result would have been different but for Acervato breaking a leg. Don Erma has been jumping well and he may be preferred to Bon Aryan. Koyston tipped out at Marton, but was going well at tho time. Kiotous may bo the favourite, with Manuiri next in demand. Balgowrie Hack. No less than 16 horses havo been accepted for tho Balgownio Hack, and tho field represents good class. Jayson and Kcd Rufus will be bracketed. The majority of those carded can lay claim to recent winning form, so that the issue is very open. West Tor, Te Rangitumau and Boudoir won at Pahiatua; Rust was second to Golden Hair in tho Great Northern Oaks; Tnitoru has only been twice out of a placo in H starts; Nightguard has won four on end, and is out of hacks, this being the last of his hack engagements. Headmistress and Matorni won at Egmont. The punters have been set a problem, but should bo able to get a good pi ice about anything. The betting may point to West Tor, Taitoru, Red Rufus. Century Hurdles. Seventeen have been carded for the Century Hurdles, and a great Tace is indicated. Make Up and Stanchion are bracketed. With a number of speedy horses engaged, the pace is bound to bo on all the way, and the horses that figure in tho finish will have to possess plenty of pace and be able to fly their fences. -Make Up, Hounslow. Blacksmith, Easterly, Consent, High Faintin', High Grader, Invictus, Million and Callamart appear to possess the required qualifications, arid it may be one of these that gets tho big end of the stake. Though the issue is very open, Invictus may be the* elect of backers, while Blacksmith and Million may be preferred to the others. Empire Handicap. The Empire Handicap should prove to be another fine race. Saltpot has been scratched, leaving 14 in at the time of writing. Spiral, Copper King, Speed, Ida Merling, Ruri, Senegal,

Lack, Kaihoro, Stitch and Chopin will all have friends, hut when the machine closes it may he found that the public have elected,, to give most support to Lack, Ruri and Senegal. Borough Hack. The day's programme will conclude with the Borough hack sprint over six furlongs. The field is very even, and most of the acceptors must be conceded a chance. Pladie, Arena, Gay Seton, Moatoa, Merry Way, Colenso, Illuminate, Cawbeen, Money Gran, and . Lady Bonald will command support, but the best hacked may be Gay Seton, Arena, Cawbeen.
