From Our Own Correspondent. Mrs. W. C. Ecelelon, tor many years a resident of Pahiatua and now of Auckland, has been spending an extended holiday with friends in the Hawke's Pay and Pahiatua districts. At tile annual meeting of the Pahiatua district branch of the Women Teachers' Association the following oflicers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Miss Wilson (D.H.S., Eketaliuna); vicepresidents, Misses Junker, Itoss, Hurren, and Burge; secretary, Mrs. Johnston (D.H.S., Eketaliuna); committee, Mrs. Beales, Misses I). Wilson, Atkinson and Fear. "9 Wednesday afternoon was fine for the commencement of the Bush Basketball Association competitions, though a keen wind was blowing. The results of the various games lor the seniors were: Woodvillc 7 v. Athletic B 3; Athletic A 15 v. Waratahs 7; Konini a bye. For the juniors: Convent 14 v. Athletic A 12; Woodvillc 13 v. Konini (1; High School 37 v. Athletic 2. A former Pahiatua resident, Miss Stephanie Gwyneth Chambers, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gower Chambers, was the bride at a recent wedding colebrated at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Wellington. The bridegroom was Wilfred George, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Watts, of 1-lawera. The bridesmaid was Miss Mary Keddell, late of Pahiatua

and now residing: in Wellington, and the best man was Mr. George Lawrence, of Hawera. The future home of Mr. and Mrs. Watts will be New Plymouth. Mrs. Leon Warne, of Russell, accompanied by her brother, Mr. G. C. Austin, of the Waikato, and her small son, have been visiting their uncle, Mr. R. G. Austin, Tyndall street. Mr. G. J. Austin, Nelson, Is at present the guest of Mr. and -Mrs. Austin. Master Robert Scandrett, elder eon of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Scandrett, Sedcolo stroet, who has been dangerously ill at his parents’ home, has now regained consciousness and is on the road to recovery. The recent Presbyterian bazaar was an outstanding success and was so well attended by residents of town and country that the gratifying sum of over £SO was i raised and the stall holders were able to 1 dispose of practically everything on their well-loaded stands. The street stall arranged by the local 1 association of the Pahiatua Girl Guides to raise funds for payment of various levies, brought in the sum of £1 15s. * At the first meeting of the managecommittee of the Bush Rugby Union a number of re-instatements and re-classi-fications were dealt with. Mr. W. Udy was elected junior sole selector and Mr. C. Wilson sole third grade selector. Fixtures for the first round of the various grades were arranged and several transfers were granted. The Wairarapa Hospital Board estimates the gross expenditure for the ensuing year at the Pahiatua Hospital at £2820, the chief Item being £ISOO for salaries. The estimated receipts are £B2O, leaving an estimated deficiency of £2OOO. The question as to the remuneration paid the nightwatcliman was fully gone Into by a meeting of the business men of the town, presided over by Mr. J. D. Wilson. Mr. L. Hartley pointed out the fact that the present nightwatchman was a thoroughly reliable man. thorough in his duties, that nearly all the fires in the residential area last year had been de-

looted by that officer and that in a recent burglary lie was of great assistance In the thieves being dcctected. A small committee consisting of Messrs W. llichnrdsori, W, T. Brown, and R. Hartley was set up to put the matter on a satisfactory basis and pay the present man a sufficient wage to ensure retaining his services. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Peter's Anglican Church was presided over by the vicar, Rev. V. A. Bianchi. A comprehensive report was presented liy the wardens, Messrs 11. A, Biclc and j V. J. Scott, cm the activities of the parish , for the past year. The report of the !• Sunday school superintendent, Mr. Haines, showed a satisfactory year's progress and the balance sheet showed a slightly better financial position than last year. The report and balance sheet of the Ladies’ Guild showed that £I2G had been raised by that body and they had a credit balance of £3l odd, having paid £9O to the church revenue. The new church fund has made satisfactory increase and now stands at £S9S 10s. The Senior Girls’ Club presented a very gratifying report. Some discussion took place in connection with a suggestion that a curate should be appointed to assist the vicar. The election of officers resulted as follows: —People’s warden, Mr. J. Sturj ton; vestry, Messrs J. M. Rule (Ballance), Kris Whitcombs (Ivaitawa), G. Haines (Mangamutu), J. Wade (Konini), A. W. Wilson, W. Vo well, G. Connelius, C. Irving, S. Boyd and G. W. Chatwin; auditors, Messrs It. C. Austin and A. A. Vaughan, ' The annual meeting of householders to elect the committee for the District i-ligli School was not well attended, proEably the sovere weather affecting the numbers. Annual reports from the chairman of the school committee, the headmaster, the dental clinic, and the Ministers’ Association were read and provided a very full account of all branches of the work for the past year. It was pointed out that next February the school will have been established for 50 years and the question of celebrating the jubilee in a fitting

A heany vote of thanks to the commit-*" tee, and especially to the chairman, l'or the amount of work and interest taken in tiie affairs of the school was heartily carried. The election resulted in all tlio previous members of the committee being re-elected, these being Messrs G. Godfrey Taylor (chairman), W. Barrett, E. H. Lett, W. 11. Mureli, W. J. Mills, E. .Sttvens, T. Burr, I’. J. Matthews and W. R. Richardson.

The fifth birthday party of the local branch of tho Wonion’s Division of the Farmers' Union was--held'lust-week and was so well attended that the hall was packed to'its utmost capacity. The president, Mrs. J. D. Piper, was in the chair. Mr. Frank White, of Tane, was the lecturer for the afternoon, and tool; as his subject “Dreams, Prophesies and Diggings.” Mr. White was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A beautifully iced birthday cake was a prominent item of the afternoon lea, tlio candles being lit by Mrs. W. Gilbert, vice-president, and the cake was cut by Mrs. I-I. Paterson, Dominion president of tlio Women’s Institutes, who wished tlio branch every success.
