Twenty Arabs Killed In Rioting at Jaffa

A Jaffa mossage statos that 20 Arabs ■were killed, there yesterday, while troublo developed in several other parts of Palestine. A crowd was demonstrating at the Tailway station at Haifa, trying to smash motor-cars, when the police were compelled to fire, wounding several. Several police were stabbed. The Air Force has rushed a squadron of aeroplanes from Egypt. A Jerusalem message says that the Palestine unrest continues and' may spread to Transjordania, whero precautionary measures are being taken by the authorities at Haifa. ' Th o police arrested members of tic Arab executive at Jaffa, including a prominent lawyer. Sullen mobs watched the funerals yesterday of those killed in the recent disturbance, but there was no disorder. The Arabs have begun a general striko at Jerusalem.

Authorities Defied and Police Forced to Fire GREAT CONTROL AND FORBEARANCE DISPLAYED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Oct. 27. Rioting occurred in Jaffa, Palestine, this afternoon and later a communique was issued by the High Commissioner of Palestine. It states that the Arab Executive Committco announced its intention to hold on October 27 a political demonstration in Jaffa, similar to that disallowed in Jerusalem on October 33. The High Commissioner received tho president and members of the Arab executive on October 25 and informed them that no political procession or demonstration would bo allowed in Jaffa, but that members of the executive would bo permitted to proceed to tho District Office and there hand a protest or manifesto to tho District Commissioner for transmission to his Excellency. Despito the High Commissioner's prohibition a procession was formed to-day at 32.30 in tho neighbourhood of the Government Office in Jaffa. It began to move and was ordered to disperse. This injunction was disobeyed and the police were assaulted. Tho police were compelled to make a baton charge to disperse the mob which, however, rc-form-ed, and again attacked the police. Shots were fired from tho crowd at tho police, who were compelled in self-defence to fire a few rounds under control. By 2 o'clock tho rioters wero dispersed by the police and quiet was restored. The reports show that the police throughout displayed great control and forbearance. The military were not called upon, as the police had the situation in hand. One member of the police force and three rioters were killed. Seven rioters are reported to have been killed. Two polico and twenty rioters suffered serious injuries. A large number of arrests has been made. There is complete quiet throughout Palestine, with the exception of Jaffa.
