Mr. A. JT. Furness, of Union street, Palmerston North, left yesterday for tho south, having received advice that his sister, Mrs. Cowan, of Grcymouth, is seriously ill. Mr. C. S. Hamlin, of Eongotca, who left New Zealand in May to visit his home town of Stroud, in England, and also visited tho French warfields, returned home last week after a short stay in Australia. Mr. F. J, Nathan, of Palmerston North, his many friends will regret to learn is at present indisposed. He has been confined to his bed for a week and is not likely to resume his normal activities for a month. The death occurred at Auckland on Friday morning, at the ago of 49, of Mr. Lancelot Gerald Hemus, a former Auckland and New Zealand representative cricketer. Ho is recalled by Auckland cricket followers of a former generation as one of tho greatest batsmen New Zealand has known. Mr. F. W. Furby, chief postmaster at Palmerston North, left on Saturday on his way south to take up his duties as chief-postmaster at Christchurch. He was accompanied by Mrs. Furby. Mr. D. Black, who has held the position of chief postmaster at Gisborne and takes Mr. Furby ’s position, has arrived in Palmerston North.
