Winooka Climbs Down BALTIMORE, Oct. 26. In an effort to vindicate Winooka Mi Rufe Naylor, the horse’s manager, announced to-day that Winooka would race to-morrow in a six-furlong event, carrying 9.0. FORM AT TRENTHAM HORSES WORTH WATCHING AT RICCARTON. A great deal of the form at the Welington meeting, concluded on Labour Day will havo an important bearing on the New Zealand Cup meeting which opens at Riccarton on Saturday of next week. This time Wellington form may be more valuable than sometimes is the case in the spring of the year, as the course conditions were more like those which customarily prevail at Riccarton. The going on the first day was hard and fast, and on the other two days,' good though dead. A smart two-year-old was seen inaction when Corinalla stepped out. She had not racer previously and consequently the public in general knew nothing of her galloping ability. She is a very smooth mover, with plenty of power, and she should win more races during the spring. As far as is known, she is to take her place In the -field for the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton next week, and though the race she won was merely a handicap, in which the good ones did not compete, she will be well worth consideration. Coronilla is one of Mr. T. H. Lowry’s breeding and is by Chief Ruler from D ’Oro, a sister to Desert Gold. She did not race on tho final day of the meeting, but had she gone to tho post she would have been favourite. Several of the South Island two-year-olds look suro to improve. One in this category is Marcus Cicero, who finished on strongly at the right end each time he was raced. He does not begin well, but given time to settle into his stride is a smart youngster. He should be suited by the distance of the C. J. C. Welcome and by the Riccarton course. Wonderful ran fairly well, and was a trifle unlucky on the last day. However, he may not be as good as the one, Mother Superior, who beat him as she looks to bo open to the greater improve ment, and unless she is too small may be good. Brown Betty is expected to be good, and is doing better now than her stablemato Golden Chance, -who is a brother to the great sprinter, Golden Wings. Custodian was not prominent, and Synagogue will improve, as he looks as if he will need a lot of racing. Pin Money ran one good raco and one poor one. He is to make the trip to Riccarton for the Welcome. Stakes and is liable to go well. Easily the best of the two-year-olds seen at the meeting was Whenuakura and it is a great pity for the C J C that he wall not be seen in action at Riccarton. He is far the best that has been seen out this season, and has been taken on to Ellerslie to compete for the Welcome Stakes at the northern meeting which conflicts with the New Zealand Cup meeting. However, his absence from the Riccarton field will leave the issue there more open and that of course is compensation. A number of the leading three-year-olds were seen at tho meeting, and many of those who witnessed the racing are prepared to see the Riccarton colt, Southdown, turn out the best of them. They base their opinion largely upon his defeat of Red Manfred and

the others of their age in the Trentham Stakes, but perhaps they fail to allow sufficiently for tho fact that Rod Manfred had been off tho course for the best part of a week, suffering from a festered foot. Moreover Red Manfred wu~ not all carefully ridden, or ho may have won despite his left up. Red Manfred made good on the last day of tho fixture by winning tho Harcourt Cup from tho brilliant Golden Wings, who is trained on the same course as fiimseif. He should be a still better horso by the time ho is required to contest tho Derby at Riccarton and with L. G. Morris in the saddle ho will take a lot of beating. Southdown is steadily improving and he will rival the Woodvillo colt in favouritism, He shapes like a real stayer. It has been evident all along that Passion Fruit is a pretty good threc-year-old. He may be a little below the best class, but he is 'deciuedly useful and even if he cannot win the Dorby thero are other races in store for him. Well placed ho is sure to pay his way. Tho most disappointing of tho threo-ycar-olds was Spiral. Ho did not run at all well, but that was not his form and something better may bo expected of him later in the season.

The massive Night Raid colt, Nightly, should eventually come good, but he may not win a Dorby. He is a very fine individual, and a born weightcarrier. Eating in England THE JOCKEY CLUB CUP LONDON, Oct. 26. On tho third day of the Newmarket Second October meeting tho following was the result of the JOCKEY CLUB CUP, a sweepstake with 500 sovs. added; second 50 sovs, third 25 sovs; for entire horses and mares; Cesarewitch course, 21 miles. D. S. Kennedy’s b in Nitsichin, by Achtoi —Lntium, syrs 1 E. T. Thornton-Smith’s b f Chatelaine, by Phalaris —Herself, 3yrs 2 V. Emanuel’s hr c Statesman, by Blandford—Dail, 3yrs 3 Tie -only starters. Won by "a length and a-half, the same distance between second and third. Winner trained by P. Thrale at East Clandon.

Nitsichin is the best staying maTC in England at present, and last year she won the Cesarewitch over the same course as yesterday, and carrying second top weight (8.9). The Jockey Club Cup twelve months ago found only one horse, Brulette, going to tie post, and Gordon Richards walked her over tho course for the stake. —“Rangi-' tira.* ’
