Honoured A very happy gathering of old friends and relatives took place at the rcsidenco of Mrs F. Venn, Clapham street, Shannon, last Saturday afternoon to celebrate her eighty-third birthday. Mrs Venn, who is one of the pioneers of the Palmerston North and llorowhenua district, is wonderfully active and bright, and still takes keen interest in social and church work. Her beautiful homo and grounds, hothouses and display of tulips, were much admired by tho guests. Musical items were given by Mrs E. T. Spencer, Mrs Larson and others, and community singing by tho company passed a pleasant afternoon. Among tho guests were Mcsdamcs James Baxter, Hallam, E. .T. Spencer, Brown, Larsen, Bade, Barnett, and the Misses Seifert, Larsen, Duncan, Low, Crowther (2), Newton and Mrs and Miss Dittmcr. The health of the hostess was proposed by Mr H. Brown, brother of Mrs Venn, and [drank with musical honours. A sumptuous afternoon tea was partaken of and two beautiful birthday cakes, the gifts of Mrs Brown and Mrs Bade, wero cut. After a photograph of Mrs Venn (carrying a shower bouquet, the gift of Miss Crowther) and the guests was taken on the lawn, the company returned to the drawing-room where, to tho strains of “Auld Lang Syne" and "She's a Jolly Good Fellow,” played by Miss Elva Hook, a happy afternoon ended, all the guests hoping to meet again for Mrs Venn’s next birthday.
