Odds Against Hole In One.

Some idea of the odds against a hole in one was gained from the second annual tournament of the “Hole in One” Club, held on the Salisbury course in the United States of America recently. Three hundred and forty members of the club made 1698 strokes at the third hole, 148 yards, using spoons, midirons, mashies, mashie-niblicks, and other clubs, but only one of the shots "was successful. Jack Hagen, a 53-ycar-old supervisor on the Salisbury course —a distant relation of Walter Ilag'en—put his third shot into the hole, using a spade mashie with which he had gained membership .of the club, the (nullification for which is the doing of a hole in one. Charles Newman, a 47-year-old lawyer, won the second prize hv laying one of his shots a foot from the pin, and four other competitors heat last year’s winning stroke, which finished two feet from the hole.
