Rancidity in Butter

SUCCESSFUL PREVENTION BY NEW PACKING PROCESS.

Ono of the greatest. problems confronting dairy exporters in New Zealand has been to overcome rancidity in butter. Dominion exporters havo for somo considerable time been faced with keen competition in the butter field, because of tho condition of our produce on arrival in the English market. Tho long period of transportation has been largely responsible for this condition of rancidity, and it has been the aim of an Auckland company to evolve a new wrapping which will definitely withstand tho action of ultra-violet rays, which are in the main the biggest contributing factors to rancidity.

Everyone connected with tho dairying industry in this country will be interested to learn of the success of the company’s experiments. Extensive tests havo been carried out, and a trial shipment of butter forwarded to the Homo market in now wrappers proves conclusively that at last a delinite solution has been found to tho problem. Reports received on tho butter from London dairy graders indicate highly satisfactory results. In conversation with Mr C. Lincoln Carr, tho local representative of the Flaxgrowers’ Pulp and Cellulose Products of New Zealand, Ltd., tho Times was shown a sample of cclluloso pulp, the raw material used in the manufacture being New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax). From this pulp a highgrade transparent wrapping is made, known as “Clarofoil.” This “Clarofoil” is specially treated by a patented process to deal with problem of rancidity. Attention is drawn to an advertisement appearing on our front page, of arrangements being made for the screening of a film in Palmerston North which demonstrates tho whole operations of the company, with particular reference to the wrapping of butter and other foodstuffs in “Clarofoil.” This film has already been shown to dairy interests locality, and also in Marton, and local authorities will shortly have a further opportunity to witness this highly interesting screening.
