From Our Own Correspondent, Dance and Tug-of-war.

On Friday evening a tug-of-war tournament and a dance were held for the purpose of raising funds for the District Nurse Committee. There was a large attendance. An energetic committee had arrangements well in hand and ail thoroughly- enjoyed the evening. A professional orchestra supplied delightful mtisJcl while the floor was in splendid order. The following teams took part in the tournament: — Mnngaluio.—Roberts, Hassell, Roddick, R. Live). Ashlea.—lt. and .T. Anderson, Saxon, Mason, C. Anderson. Fitzherbcrt. —W. and H. Laury, H. Koskin, A. Millington, T. Webb. Koputaroa.—Palmer, Hudson, Hood, Graham, Syme. Shannon. —Bovis, Batt Bros, (o), and Dewar. _ Makerua. —Anderson Bros. (-), Campbell, Judd, Judd. Tokomaru. —Voss, Pope, Grcgoij, Schwass, Schwass. The first pull took place between Ivoputaroa and Bovis’s team (Shannon), the former winning by a quarter of an inch. The second pull between Fitzherbert and Tokomaru was an easy win for Fitzherberf The third pull between Marekua and ' Mnngahao was an easy win for me latter. In the fourth pull Mangahao v. Fitzherbert, Ihe latter bad a fairly easy win. In the fifth pull Koputaroa v. As ilear, Koputaroa had an easy win. Tim final pull between Koputaroa. and hitzherbert was a great struggle resulting m a win for Ihe former by an inch and a quarter. The control of the tournament was In the very able hands of Mr. W. The duties of M.C. were capably carried out, by Mr. Mubey, and the event proved such a popular success that, the committee is considering the promotion of another and larger one.

The Shannon Golf Club held its closing: day on Saturday last, the weather condilions after previous heavy rain being kind and conditions being ideal for the numerous competitions that were placed. Neighbouring clubs were represented and a most enjoyable afternoon’s sport resulted Refreshments were provided by the members. The committee had arranged some interesting and novelty events and a good deal of amusement was caused by the novelty putting which was carried out with the use of such mediums as golf ball, cricket ball, ping pong ball, reel, pine cone, pipe joint, etc. The following are the results of the various events:— Novelty putting: Ladies, Mrs. Cronquest; men, J. The mixed foursomes match was v.on by Mrs. Cronquest (Shannon) and Mr. \\ iikinson (Otald). During the afternoon prizes and trophies won during the season wore presented. In a very happy a " d humorous speech the president (Mi. J. IBovis) referred to the very excellent season that was just closing; to the enjoyable times they had all had together and with visiting players; to the generosit of the Stern brothers for the use of the splendid grounds; and to the fine committee which had carried °nt J,ts duties in such a methodical, manner. The pi evident of the Ladies’ Club (Mrs A. H. Morgan) referred to the splendid tvoik done for the club by Mrs. C. Easton, and on behalf of the lady members asked Mrs. Easton to accept a small token of their regard and respect m the form of a ro se bowl. Amidst loud applause Mio. Easton rose to reply and thanked the ladies for thinking of her and said that anything she might have donei was a h-b----our of love. Cycling Club. A meeting was recently held for the purpose of forming a cycling club in Shannon and guile a large number %veie present. Air. tv. Carter was elected chairman and Mr. T. Purcell secretary and treasurer. A committee consisting ot ..Messrs H. Barber, W. Radford, A. Thompson, .1. Dally and E. K. Gardiner was set up Air. t-l. Barber was elected handicapper and starter. The .subscription to the club was fixed at f’s 6d, and it was decided to hold a number of road races—one ,-ace each Saturday.- For the first group of six races there will be a, trophy valued at. 80s first prize, and 10s for iaslest time. Points will be awarded as follow: First, three points; second, two; thin., one. Fastest time, two points. On Saturday a good crowd gathered at the Post Office to see the start oi _ the hist, race to Alakerua and back, finishing up with three laps of the oval at the Domain. Six competitors entered: K.
