Eggs Eggstraordinary
The wonderful egg-laying propensities of various breeds are recorded in the daily papers from time to time, but a local resident who wishes to remain anonymous has achieved a distinction with his birds that eclipses all existing records. On August 11 last he purchased ar, a local mart 12 Black Orpington pullets at 3s each. All the judges, and there wero many present, smiled knowingly when the one and only bid of 3s saw the birds change hands. They would not lay for months as they were apparently late hatched, etc. One can imagine the young poultryfanner's face when he collected one egg the first, day. On a close inspection of his flock he discovered that a small hen was responsible, so there were really only 11 pullets. The hen kept up a daily egg and was joined by one or two pullets and last week the 12 birds produced 72 eggs. Saturday’s effort resulted in 13 eggs from 12 birds, which was something unusual and has demonstrated tha capabilities of the Black Orpington.
Quite likely this record may be doubted, but careful records are kept and 13 eggs from 12 layers is a fact. The owner says that no special feeding is indulged "in. The fowls get. mixed grain morning and night and plenty of greenstuff during the day, ample grit and fresh water. The eggs are brown and of good size.
