LONDON WOOL SALES JAPANESE BUYING THREAT. LONDON, Sept. 22. Offerings at tiie wool sales to-day amounted to 10,030 bales, including 0117 New Zealand, and 7735 bales were sold. There was a full attendance of buyers, and late rates were well maintained, except for inferior qualities, which were slightly irregular and weaker in price. Greasy merinos, from Queensland, sold at 17d highest, and 15 5-8 d average. New South Wales merinos sold up to 17jd. Scoured merinos from Queensland made 27Jd highest and 25 l-8d avcrag_e. South Australian merinos sold at 25d highest and 23£d average. New Zealand scoured merino sales were “Gerard" 27d, and New Zealand greasy half bred, ‘ ‘ Baftields, ’ ’ made 16d highest and laid average. The Yorkshire Post wool expert says London’s substantial endorsement of overseas rates, though not sensational, has confirmed most people’s desire to see a steady maintenance of a level commanding general support, and is con-

tributing valuably to lioinc confidence and increased consumption. The Yorkshire Observer has interviewed manufacturers at length in. relation to Japan’s threat to divert its purchases of wools to -South America as a reprisal for Australia’s anti-dumping tariff. All agree that it is bluff, because the South American supply of merinos is limited, whereas Australian merinos arc plentiful and arc essential for the goods in which Japan now specialises. Even if Japan did transfer its purchases to South America it would only increase the price in South America and would encourage Bradford to restrict its purchases there and buy more from Australia. Nevertheless, it is admitted that it is a significant fact that Japan is crossing 'Australian sheep with Mongolian breeds.
