Sudden Strike by Sydney Fellmongeries

SERIOUS LOSS THREATENED United Press Association. —By ElectricTclegrajih—Copyright. SYDNEY, Sept. 23. The fellmongering industries in Sydney last evening were plunged into chaos by the sudden strike of 750 employees at the five principal Botany fellmongeries. The dispute is due to the refusal of the employers to restore the 10 per cent, wage cut imposed some time ago by the Court. The busiest time of the year was selected for the hold-up, and tho employers declare that if <thc strike lasts three days 70,000 skins, valued at £35,000, will be rendered worthless.

Extension of Trouble Feared MINISTER OF LABOUR WATCHING EVENTS Received Sunday, 7 p.rn. SYDNEY, Sept. 24. There are now 1400 men idle as a result of the employees’ decision to ccaso operations. On Friday SOO were on strike and GOO were dismissed as a result.

An early settlement seems unlikely, and the trouble may involve tho butchers, tanners, storemen, packers and road transport unions. Tho Chamber of Manufacturers passed a resolution: “After clearing up work iu hand tho best course would be to close the works.” Meanwhile the State Government is powerless as the dispute affects a Federal award, but in view of the fact that thousands of State workers would be affected by an extension of the trouble, the Minister of Labour is watching the events closely.
