Wanganui Vanquish Manawatu at Soccer

TWO-GOAL MARGIN IN TRIANGULAR SERIES CONTEST.

At North Street Park on Saturday, the final game of the West Coast triangular Soccer competition, in so far as Man-awatu is concerned, was played, when the home team took the field against the Wanganui representatives. Unfortunately it was 40 minutes after the scheduled time before play was got under way, but the teams sooi\ settled to their work and made up leeway. After a game hard fought all the way and seasoned with bright if not spectacular soccer, Wanganui won by four goals to two. The winners generally gave the more finished display of the code, although much of their success was undoubtedly due to tho individuality of Heath. Manawatu could not play up to the standard set early in the season, but were always difficult to get past.

The Teams. Manawatu (green): Crowe, Askam, Travers, Cummings, Coombs, Rabbitts, Bridgens, Eliott, Young, Hearsey, McSheifery (captain). Wanganui (blue): J. Walker, J. Thompson, H. Taylor, S. Kidd, J. Grumbley, H. Cave, E. Bell, C. Dashfield, W. Heath, F. Newman, T. Quinn. Wanganui set the ball rolling, but Manawatu went with a rush to the visitors’ goal. Their forward line, however, could by no means do as it wished with the ball, and was well checked. The blue backs were soon functioning better, and sent the invaders away with good footwork. Coombs and Rabbitts combined prettily, and were instrumental in Tepulsing the blue vanguard. The latter unit, however, was not to bo denied, and the well-known goalgetter, Heath, soon came to light. Taking a centre nicely, he went right into the goalmouth, and after drawing Crowe from his den, had no difficulty in popping the ball in. It was a brief but scintillating piece of work.

The river city men were finding their feet better after this, and the wind advantage did not avail Manawatu to any great extent. The latter, however, after an unavailing' corner-, took charge iu front of the visitors’ goal, and Eliott had Walker beaten with a short driving shot. Manawatu I, Wanganui 1.

The goal proved a good tonic, and the greens stuck to the ball well for a period, bustling Walker with some shots from the field. The latter was well up to his game, and Hearsey, who in particular was the dangerous link, found him a hard man to pass. Thompson and Taylor also put in a lot of good work in repulsing the invaders. Flay swung up and down field with pleasing variety, nevertheless there was a lot of purposeless punting that served only to keep all sections busy. Heath and Co. were always dangerous when the ball came their way, and threatened to rattle on a goal once or twice. There was a culpable mis-kick when three Wanganui men, with noobdy to rob them of the ball in front of the net, could only direct it skywards. The Manawatu men wore game fighters, and seemed likely to play out the spell in foreign territory. They were, however, up against a well trained team which continued to furnish stolid Soccer, and the dividing whistle found two even teams on even terms.

The Second Spell. Manawatu went close to scoring after tho resumption, but soon had to capitulate to tho Wanganui combination, which was making a welter of it. Clever tactics saw the visitors play themselves into a scoring position, and snappy work among the forwards had its roward when Quinn got the ball homo with an evasive shot. It was good team work. Wanganui 2, Manawatu 1.

Manawatu were given a chance when a penalty came their way, but McSheffery misdirected. However, greens made amends a moment later, and Hearsey equalised with a brilliant angle shot that swept the ball across tho face of the net and tied it up in tho corner netting.

It was an alternating game in the matter of scoring goals, and after some clever play among the inside men, 'Wanganui took the lead again when Heath, at centre forward, rattled tho defence with a long grasscutter that did not give Crowo a chance at all. The blues were combining with telling effect at this stage, and Heath was soon back at it again, running through the defence in easy fashion to get his third goal for the day.
