POTATO MARKET DROPPINCR.EDUCED SHIPMENTS TO THE NORTH. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The potato market showed little change until to-day, when there was a tendency towards lower values, yesterday business was done at £3 15s and to-day £3 10s to £3 12s 6d is quoted, with Dakotas at £4 ss. There is practically no inquiry ironi the north and shipments represent consigned potatoes. The Waimarino on Thursday night took 2809 sacks from Lyttelton, and with 1700 from Timaru, 4500 sacks went north. There arc still fair quantities of potatoes left in some districts, but opinion is that there will be a clean-up by the end of the season. The extent of the decline in the potato trade with the North Island is remarkable, as will be shown from the following figures from Lyttelton for the past four years: 1933, 96‘,080; 1932, 143,586; 1931, 247,997; 1930, 279,559. During the present season 40,000 sacks have been exported from Lyttelton and Timaru to South America.

The reduced shipments to the north indicate the extent to which production has increased in the other island. Last year there was a heavy disposal of seed to the north, but this season the quantity has been small, from which it may be inferred that northern growers arc using their own seed. Fowl wheat is unchanged at 3s Gd at Lyttelton and better than grade at 3s 7d. No. 1 Partridge peas arc worth 3s 6d a bushel on trucks, but there is no inquiry for export. Oats arc not engaging any attention. The small seeds market is lifeless, quotations being unaltered.

WOOL FIRM AT LONDON LONDON, Sept. 21. Offerings at the London wool sales today were 11,844 bales, including '3508 bales of New Zealand wool. About 7790 bales were sold. The general tone of the market continued firm, and the bulk of the offerings were sold, including sales to some Continental buyers at full recent rates. A few withdrawals were made owing to sellers’ linn limits. Greasy Victorian merinos sold at 21d to 20 3-8 d; New South Wales merinos fetched 19d to 18 3-8 d; scoured merinos from Queensland made 28d; South Australian scoured, 24d to 20£d. New Zealand scoured merino, ‘ Mako, ’ sold at 24d to 22d, and New Zealand greasy halfbreds at 16d. BUTTER MARKET HOLDS BUT “QUIETLY STEADY.” LONDON, Sept. 21. The butter market is quietly steady.
