James John, aged 25, a labourer, was shot five times in the stomach and chest by a man who stepped out of a car and afterwards drove away with a companion. John, who died on the pavement, was in the company of a boxer named Chrisfield. When the car drew up, the bullets were deliberately rained at John, but Chrisfield was unharmed. He declares that the murderer was unknowu to him.
