Following a long illness the death occurred at his residence, Pahiatua, on Saturday, of Mr David Stuart, son of the late Mr Charles Stuart, who arrived on these shores in the Birman in 1842, and a brother of Mr Bichard Stuart, of Fcilding. Testimony to the public appreciation of the work of Sir George Fowlds for Auckland and tho country for many years was given at a public meeting in the Auckland Town Hall yesterday afternoon, when the Mayor (Mr G. W. Hutchison) presented him with a cheque for £1350, subscribed by the eitizons, and glowing tributes were paid by representative speakers to his character, capacity and service. At Wellington on Wednesday last, the death occurred with tragic suddenness of Mr Edward Beckman, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Beckman, of Bongotai. The deceased gentleman was of a very retiring disposition, and his kindly and generous nature won him many friends, whose sympathy is extended to his young daughter. His wife, who was a Miss Scheidt, of Bunnythorpc, predeceased him some years ago.

Mr J. G. Bead was met by the members of the Cosmopolitan Club on Thursday evening, when Mr L. Anderson, a vice-president of the club, presented him with a handsome chiming clock in view Of his approaching marriage, while ho was also asked to accept a gift on behalf of the brideelect. A concert party, under the direction of Mr W. Marshall, presented a musical programme and made the evening a very happy one. •

A State luncheon to Bear-Admiral Dalglish, of tho Australian Squadron, and his senior officers, was tendered by the Government at Wellington to-day. The Bight Hon. G. W. Forbes presided, and besides the Ministers there were at tho top table the Speakers of the two Houses, the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers), Sir Francis Bell, the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), tho loader of the Opposition (Mr If. E. Holland), and Commodore Bur-gcss-WatsOE (New Zealand Royal Navy).
